The night air, blowing about his temples, refreshed his fevered brow, and he gave himself up to dreams such as are inspired by the silvered atmosphere, when the moon, in her pearly splendor, looks down upon the troubled earth, and hushes it to repose. The emperor, however, did not sleep. For a while, he lay with closed eyes, and then, raising himself, looked up toward the heavens.
The old man was not reposing; thoughtful and aroused he took a clear retrospection of those phases of life that had left scars even on his placid heart. A shadow, for it seemed nothing more, lingered by his side. It moved now and then, and amid the hushes of the wind you might have known that two persons breathed close together in the old porch. At length what seemed the shadow spoke.
The "bravos" of a devoted few were drowned at once by the "hushes." That is the truth. La Petite Presse of this morning is polite. I can ask no more of it. Farewell, dear good master, do not pity me, for I don't feel pitiable. P. S. A nice bit from my servant when he handed me your letter this morning. Knowing your handwriting, he said sighing: "Ah! the best one was not there last evening!"
Every time his voice hushes the assembled parliament, it reminds us of our common country; and even the discussion amongst his constituents which his voice provokes, clears their perceptions of the public interest, and enlightens themselves, from the intellect which commands their interests, and compels their attention. Egerton, then, forever!
Therefore do the Gospels bid us listen when He rebukes the fever, and it departs; when He says to the demons 'Go, and they go; when one word louder in its human articulation than the howling wind hushes the surges; when 'Talitha cumi' brings back the fair young spirit from dreary wanderings among the shades of death.
Oh, we never get away from the benediction of such a face! It looks at us through storm and night. It smiles all to pieces the world's frown. After thirty-five years of rough, tumbling on the world's couch, it puts us in the cradle again, and hushes us as with the very lullaby of heaven. Let the old cradle rest in the garret. It has earned its quiet.
The crowd's kinder excited and shovin' around and saying things to each other without knowing what they're doing, when the young fellow what really starts the row lets out a yell you could hear a mile away, and the crowd hushes up kinder sudden; I guess everybody got cold chills down their backs all at once.
Kit watched him wondering. The old man, so tranquil amid the stir and whisper of death, affected the boy as One years ago had affected other seamen tempest-tossed. His chattering heart hushed as a sparrow hushes in the quiet of a great cathedral. Then the world rushed in on him with a shout. Again that gust of laughter outside, that roaring chorus. The Gap Gang were making merry.
That is God's plan for the earth. And that, too, let me say to you, is His plan for our day-by-day life. It hushes one's heart with a gentle awe to go out early in the morning after a clear night when air and flower and leaf are fragrant with an indescribable freshness, and listen to God's voice saying, "I will be as the dew unto Israel." That sentence is the climax of the book where it occurs.
But ere the waves have rolled over her, the cry of fear that yet trusts, and of trust that yet fears, wakes Him who knew the need, even while He seemed to slumber, and one mighty word, as of a master to some petulant slave, 'Peace! be still, hushes the confusion, and rebukes the fear, and rewards the faith. 'The Lord is in the midst of her' that is the perennial fact.
