There are several halibut banks besides those located on the charts, where the Indians obtain the most abundant supplies of these, their principal article of food. On the day of our arrival at Ninstints, the Indians returned with a large number caught upon banks opposite the central portion of the western shore of Provost Island. There are also banks off Sand Spit Point and Skedance.
All out of myself with pride I was I that was no more than a lad, but hauling halibut trawls with full-grown Gloucester men on the Grand Banks! And the passage home that trip, Simon! Oh, boy, that passage home!"
Riddel, with a faint scream which was a perfect revelation to the companion, snatched her hand away. "I meant my hand of cards," she said, breathlessly. "Really, Brill, really," said Halibut, stepping forward fussily. "Oh!" said the Major, blankly; "cards!" "That's what I meant, of course," said Mrs. Riddel, recovering herself with a laugh.
"Chess," repeated the Major. "It is hardly respectful," demurred Halibut. "What do you think the lady would do if she heard of it?" "Laugh," replied the Major, with conviction. "I believe she would," said the other, brightening. "I believe she would." "You agree, then?" "With conditions." "Conditions?" repeated the Major.
The otter-trawl fleet, both here and in The Channel, takes a large amount of this species when its total catch is considered; and these fish are mainly small, of from 4 to 10 pounds in weight, with only rarely a larger one. The salt fishers, also, and the rest of the market fleet combine to make an imposing total of the poundage of halibut from Georges and its vicinity.
B' th' way, that puts me in mind 'f one I had for cook once. Jiminy! how that man would cook! He'd cook a slice of halibut so you wouldn't know it from beefsteak." "Dear me! how did he do it?" asked Aunt Maria, who had a fancy for kitchen mysteries. "Never could find out," said Glover, stepping adroitly out of his difficulty. "Don't s'pose that nigger would a let on how he did it for ten dollars."
Some people put in vinegar; but this is easily added by those who like it. A common sized cod-fish should be put in when the water is boiling hot, and boil about twenty minutes. Haddock is not as good for boiling as cod; it takes about the same time to boil. A piece of halibut which weighs four pounds is a large dinner for a family of six or seven. It should boil forty minutes.
In such a highly organized fish as the halibut, which weighs about as much as an average-sized man, the cerebrum is smaller than a melon-seed. Continuing to grow by adding concentric layers at the surface, the cerebrum and cerebellum become much larger in birds and lower mammals, gradually covering up the optic lobes.
Andy eased in to the wharf with cautious eye. He threw the rope to Uncle William and busied himself with the sail. Uncle William peered down upon him. "Got quite a nice mess, didn't ye?" "Yep." "How'd they run?" "Cod mostly." "Ye got some halibut." "A few." Andy admitted it grudgingly. His tone implied that the Creator withheld halibut out of pure spite.
Halibut assented, and walking slowly on, wondered vaguely what gaudy color it was that had attracted his eye. It dawned on him at length that it must be the Major's tie, and he suddenly quickened his pace, by no means reassured as the man of war also quickened his. "Halloa, Brill!" he cried. "Half a moment."
