The most extraordinary part of it was that I should be treating Carlotta as a grown-up woman, after the fashion of the hero of a modern French novel. Perhaps I was younger than I thought. She kept her eyes fixed downward. "Why are you angry with me?" she asked in a low voice. "I haven't the remotest idea," said I.

Miss Kilrain was accorded the honour. But she surprised them. She did come; she came tripping up on the balls of her feet the very next Friday. They heard her deprecating little cough as she came up the stairs. When one was little, one had played "Let's pretend." But in the full illusion of the playing, if grown-up people had appeared, the play stopped short. It was like that, now the silence.

It seemed like a dream when I found myself at last a big fellow of sixteen at the commencement of the summer holidays. There was Ellen, almost a grown-up young lady in my eyes, at all events and John, who had been in Uncle James's counting-house in London, a man with big whiskers. "Well, Harry," said Uncle James, "would you like to go back to school, or accompany John and Ellen to South America?

Before the porridge gives out I expect we shall be rescued, or my baby will be grown-up enough to take care of itself." Phil pronounced the word "rescued" in such fashion that Madge stopped in her forward march to question her. "Out with it, Phil! You have something on your mind," she declared. "You might as well tell me."

He saw that they had the hands and figures of children, the heads of children, the unlined faces and smooth foreheads of children, but their gestures, and something in their movements, belonged to grown-up people, and the expression of their eyes in meaning and intelligence was the expression of old people and not of children.

The men and maids all respected her, and said, "Just see how she takes hold of everything, as sensibly as a grown-up person!"

It was known afterward on the island as the Sparrows' Year, and so, when you meet, as you doubtless sometimes do, grown-up people who puff and blow as if they thought themselves bigger than they are, very likely they belong to that year. You ask them. Peter was a just master, and paid his work-people every evening.

"No fear of that, my dear," said he, pinching one of her plump fingers. "It will be rather a Darby and Joan marriage, of course," she smiled. "Will it?" replied Heriot, with a glint out of the corner of his eye that reminded her forcibly of the late Captain Dunbar. "Oh, Heriot!" she expostulated. "Remember you're the father of a grown-up family."

A day or two after the family had learned to take care of themselves, the original pair, the parents of the pretty brood, came and went together to the field, while the younglings appeared sometimes in a little flock, and sometimes one alone; and from that time they were to be rated as grown-up and educated cardinals. A brighter or prettier trio I have not seen.

We either take them to dramatic performances for grown-up people, or we have children's theaters where the pieces, charming as they may be, are of necessity deprived of the essential elements which constitute a drama or they are shriveled up to suit the capacity of the child.
