'Murray Edwardes has promised himself heart and soul to the work. If necessary, he will give up his chapel to carry it on. But we hope it will be possible to work them together. What a brick he is! What a blessed chance it was that took me to that breakfast party at Flaxman's! The rest of the time before departure he spent almost entirely in consultation and arrangement with Edwardes.
But as my efforts to please dons by inquiring after their health had not been successful, I went on reading until Mr. Edwardes stood up, and feeling then that something had gone hopelessly wrong, I stopped to look at him. I could see that he was exceedingly angry, but why in the world he had become so suddenly afflicted I had not an idea. "I do not require to hear any more of that.
Edwardes spoke reflectively; then with a straightforward honesty he went on: "It rather seems to me that once in a great while there rises in the world a marvel-man. To such a spirit the impossible is possible and opportunity is pliant. He may become the greatest boon or the greatest scourge of his generation.
"Perhaps so far I've hurt only myself but I've done that mortally. Then you come and I learn that you've woven an illusion about me and I destroy it." Jefferson Edwardes smiled in the dark, but spoke gravely. "You call yourself an artificial little flirt. You haven't flirted with me. Why?" "With you I have talked ten minutes." She laughed suddenly as though at some absurd thought.
On the 15th, Sher Afzul sent in a messenger, to say that a party of sepoys had been defeated at Reshun, and that an officer was captive in his camp. The next day a letter was received from Lieutenant Edwardes. A truce was made for three days and, afterwards, extended to six; but this came to an end on the 23rd of March, and hostilities again began. The prospect was gloomy.
After I had been to my rooms and had a bath I went round to Oriel to see Fred, but he was not in his rooms, so I left a note to tell him that he must come to luncheon with me. Then I rushed back to St. Cuthbert's and went to hear Mr. Edwardes lecturing. I missed the beginning of the lecture, and I might just as well have stayed away altogether, for Mr.
'Oh, but you must save the champagne! he said, and, bending his chair backward, he was about to recall the man, Lucy stopped him. 'Don't don't, please, Mr. Edwardes! she said, in an agony. He lifted his eyebrows good-humouredly, and desisted.
You pledged yourself to me and then came this menace. I couldn't let you act blindly. Now if you are still resolute " "I am more so," she declared. "My brother issued his challenge and we accepted it. Yet we went abjectly away and obeyed him. If he means to fight he must fight now. I am no less a Burton than himself and I am tired of submission." Jefferson Edwardes smiled.
Inside, as soon as Murray Edwardes and Elsmere, by dint of good humor and strong shoulders, had succeeded in shoving their way through and shutting the door behind them, they found a still more animated performance in progress.
On the 13th the enemy hoisted a white flag, and informed the officers that there had been some fighting at Chitral but that now peace was made, and offering to let the garrison go either to Chitral or to Mastuj. Lieutenant Edwardes upon this agreed to a three days' armistice, and sent letters to Chitral and Mastuj; meantime the garrison were well treated and supplies sent in to them.
