It's clear Miss Dombey feels that they are all subservient to her father. What has become of Susan? 'The young woman? returned the Captain. 'It's my belief as she was sent away again the will of Heart's Delight. I made a signal for her when Lady lass first come, and she rated of her wery high, and said she had been gone a long time.

More and more light broke in upon them; distincter and distincter dreams disturbed them; an accumulating crowd of objects and impressions swarmed about his rest; and so he passed from babyhood to childhood, and became a talking, walking, wondering Dombey. Yet, in spite of his early promise, all this vigilance and care could not make little Paul a thriving boy.

He soon returned, out of breath, to say that Mr Dombey was not there. It was Saturday, and he had gone to Brighton. 'I tell you what, Wal'r! said the Captain, who seemed to have prepared himself for this contingency in his absence. 'We'll go to Brighton. I'll back you, my boy. I'll back you, Wal'r. We'll go to Brighton by the afternoon's coach.

His Royal Highness the Duke of York observed on more than one occasion, "there is no adulation in Joey. He is a plain old soldier is Joe. He is tough to a fault is Joseph:" but it's a great name, Sir. By the Lord, it's a great name! said the Major, solemnly. 'You are good enough to rate it higher than it deserves, perhaps, Major, returned Mr Dombey. 'No, Sir, said the Major, in a severe tone.

The child clung close about her, with the same intensity as before, and never raised her head, or moved her soft cheek from her mother's face, or looked on those who stood around, or spoke, or moved, or shed a tear. 'Restless without the little girl, the Doctor whispered Mr Dombey. 'We found it best to have her in again. 'Can nothing be done? asked Mr Dombey. The Doctor shook his head.

'What is the matter, Mrs Pipchin? said Mr Dombey, looking round. 'Softly! Pray! Mrs Pipchin, in her deference, merely muttered at the young man as she passed on, and said, 'Oh! he was a precious fellow' leaving the young man, who was all meekness and incapacity, affected even to tears by the incident.

Neither of the two observed that in the course of these walks, they attracted the attention of a working man who was standing near the engine, and who touched his hat every time they passed; for Mr Dombey habitually looked over the vulgar herd, not at them; and the Major was looking, at the time, into the core of one of his stories.

'This here, Ma'am, said Toodle, 'is him with the short legs and they was, said Mr Toodle, with a touch of poetry in his tone, 'unusual short for leathers as Mr Dombey made a Grinder on. The recollection almost overpowered Miss Tox. The subject of it had a peculiar interest for her directly. She asked him to shake hands, and congratulated his mother on his frank, ingenuous face.

Any readers of these pages doubtless remember the huge old-fashioned clocks, tower-like in shape, that in the days of their childhood ornamented the remote corner of the hall, or stood solemnly near the chimney in the sitting-room of the old homestead, such a clock as that which greeted little Paul Dombey, when he commenced to be a man, with its "How, is, my, lit, tle, friend? how, is, my, lit, tle, friend?"

In Mr Toots's lodgings, Mr Toots attires himself as if he were at least the Bridegroom; determined to behold the spectacle in splendour from a secret corner of the gallery, and thither to convey the Chicken: for it is Mr Toots's desperate intent to point out Florence to the Chicken, then and there, and openly to say, 'Now, Chicken, I will not deceive you any longer; the friend I have sometimes mentioned to you is myself; Miss Dombey is the object of my passion; what are your opinions, Chicken, in this state of things, and what, on the spot, do you advise?
