"Stop, /mon cher/, stop; don't call me Mister; we are to be friends; I hate delaying that which /must be/, even by a superfluous dissyllable; you are Maltravers, I am Ferrers. But you were going to talk about life. Suppose we /live/ a little while, instead of talking about it?

The rhythm of Tibullus is smooth, easy, and graceful, but tame. He generally concludes his period at the end of the couplet, and closes the couplet with a dissyllable; but he does not like Ovid make it an invariable rule. The diction is severely classical, free from Greek constructions and antiquated harshness.

The dissyllable termination, which the critick rightly appropriates to the drama, is to be found, though, I think, not in Gorboduc which is confessedly before our authour; yet in Hieronnymo, of which the date is not certain, but which there is reason to believe at least as old as his earliest plays.

Have pitched in heaven's smile their camp of death. The practice which Shelley follows in this line of making 'heaven' a dissyllable is very frequent with him. So also with 'even, higher, and other such words. +Stanza 51,+ 11. 3, 4. If the seal is set Here on one fountain of a mourning mind. Shelley certainly alludes to himself in this line.

FOEDUS: this seems opposed to pacem as a formal engagement is to a mere abstention from hostilities. Cf. below, 25. QUO VOBIS: from the Annales. On the case of vobis, see Roby, 1154, A. 235, a, H. 384, 4, n. 2. ANTEHAC: always a dissyllable in verse, and probably so pronounced in prose VIAI: the old genitive. A. 36 a, G. 27, Rem. 1, H. 49, 2.

It's I that wud sooner see the plentiful hearths of ould Ireland, where the turf fire cooks the vittles dacently! Oh wirra! why did we ever lave it? But Mr. Wynn intercepted the rising chorus by the simple dissyllable, 'Andy! 'Sir, yer honour! wheeling round, and suddenly resuming a jocose demeanour; 'I was only jokin' about bein' back.

John Kemble's characteristic differences with the public, who objected, perhaps not without reason, to hearing the word "aches" pronounced as a dissyllable, although the line imperatively demands it; and Shakspeare shows that the word was not unusually so pronounced, as he introduces it with the same quantity in the prose dialogue of "Much Ado about Nothing," and makes it the vehicle of a pun which certainly argues that it was familiar to the public ear as ache and not ake.

'Scarce had lamented Forbes paid The tribute to his Minstrel's shade; The tale of friendship scarce was told, Ere the narrator's heart was cold Far may we search before we find A heart so manly and so kind. It is only of late years that Forbes has generally ceased to be a dissyllable.

But my resources were not yet exhausted, and I hurled monosyllable, dissyllable, and polysyllable at their devoted heads, shouted "Akh! Te shelma! Proclataya takaya! Smatree! Ya tibi dam!" but all in vain; the dogs were evidently insensible to rhetorical fireworks of this description, and manifested their indifference by a still slower gait.
