Petersburg quartet was founded in 1868, and became one of the leading musical organisations of the Russian capital, until the death of Davidoff, the violoncellist, who was one of its members, in 1890. Auer has been very active in the musical life of St. Petersburg, and is very highly esteemed both as a man and as a musician, teacher, and performer.

I have always said, "The only genius on the Yiddish stage is Goldwater." Klostermann bah! He produces not so badly, but act? My grandmother's hen has a better stage presence. And there is Davidoff a voice like a frog and a walk like a spider. And these charlatans I only heard of when I came to New York. But you, Goldwater your fame has blown across the Atlantic, over the Carpathians.

He has, I understand, published in the Russian language a tribute to the memory of Scott. King Richard III., Act III. Sc. 1. Count Orloff Davidoff lived to falsify this "saying." He revisited England in 1872, and had the pleasure of meeting with Scott's great-granddaughter, and talking to her of these old happy Abbotsford days. Combinations of Workmen.

Sir William Rae died at St. Catherine's on the 19th October 1842. David Boyle of Shewalton, L.J.C. from 1811, and Lord President from 1841 till 1852. He died in 1853. See Autobiography, 1787, in Life, vol. i. pp. 39, 40. Virg. Æn. i. 122. M. Davidoff has, in his mature life, amply justified Sir Walter's prognostications.

Worked hard to-day and only took a half hour's walk with Hector Macdonald! Colin Mackenzie unwell; his asthma seems rather to increase, notwithstanding his foreign trip! Alas! long-seated complaints defy Italian climate. We had a small party to dinner. Captain and Mrs. Hamilton, Davidoff, Frank Scott, Harden, and his chum Charles Baillie, second son of Mellerstain, who seems a clever young man.

Their lives are certainly not ornamental. Young Mr. Davidoff entered upon the cause of the late discontents in Russia, which he imputes to a deep-seated Jacobin conspiracy to overthrow the state and empire and establish a government by consuls. Returned last night with my frozen Muscovites to the Capital, and suffered as usual from the incursions of the black horse during the night.

We had excellent dinners a dozen dishes, served on silver; but when, in the evening, we sent for the bill, wishing to pay for our dinners of that and the previous day, we found that they had been prepared at the house of Madame Johanna Davidoff, a lady of this town, and she would not allow us to pay for anything. Sir Moses wanted to give her a costly present, but she declined accepting it.

After Court I went with Lord Wriothesley Russell, to Dalkeith House, to see the pictures; Charles K. Sharpe alongst with us. We satisfied ourselves that they have actually frames, and that, I think, was all we could be sure of. Lord Wriothesley, who is a very pleasant young man, well-informed, and with some turn for humour, dined with us, and Mr. Davidoff met him.

Davidoff and his tutor kept an engagement with us to dinner notwithstanding the death of the Emperor Alexander. They went to the play with the womankind; I stayed at home to write. December 24. Wrote Walter and Jane, and gave the former an account of how things had been in the money market, and the loan of £10,000.

In the February of 1883 he actually went to Paris, to help Anton and Davidoff prepare for their great festival there. The journey, however, fulfilled Kashkine's bitter prophecy.
