He glanced at Cuckoo's hair and at the back of her thin hand moving to and fro above the little contented dog. "Why not?" he said.
Between her and starvation lay Jessie, curved in sleep, unconscious that her small future was being debated with tears and with horror. Long ago the little dog had entered Cuckoo's heart to be cherished there. Many wretched London women own such a little dog, to whom they cling with a passion such as more fortunate women lavish upon their children.
Miss Longfellow did not answer his inquiry, but stood in the hall and cried, "Zio!" in a voice like a May cuckoo's. A door opened, and in a moment Dr. Franchi, small and frail and charming, came forward with a sweet smile and hand outstretched, through a throng of fawning, grinning dogs. "A pleasure indeed, Mr. Beechtree." "He is like Leo XIII.," was Henry's thought.
She was beaten by the thongs of a world that teems with Pharisees. It clung to her. She had, through all her days and nights, been put only to the black uses of evil. It sought to use her only for good. And now at last it drew strength and power from the soul of the lady of the feathers. And the doctor knew that the secret of Cuckoo's grand influence to succour lay in her completeness.
"I need not speak of it, my lord," said the man of war; "the world knows it all perhaps, but the men of mohair the poor sneaking citizens of London, who would see a man of valour eat his very hilts for hunger, ere they would draw a farthing from their long purses to relieve them. O, if a band of the honest fellows I have seen were once to come near that cuckoo's nest of theirs!"
"Hush!" said Miss Grizzel, holding up her hand in a way that reminded Griselda of the cuckoo's favourite "obeying orders." Just then, too, in the distance the ante-room clock struck twelve. "Cuckoo! cuckoo! cuckoo!" on it went. Griselda could have stamped with irritation, but somehow, in spite of herself, she felt compelled to say nothing.
The rooks are cawing in the elms, the cuckoo's note has been heard in the spinney for some time before these little visitors pass in jerky flight up and down the valley.
The manner, however, was more violently altered. It was that which made the doctor think again and intensely of Cuckoo's vague yet startling statement. "Where did you meet Cuckoo, doctor?" It was Julian who spoke, and the words were uttered with some excitement. "I have met her," Levillier replied. It was sufficiently evident that he did not intend to say where.
Julian thought that he found a reason for Cuckoo's aversion in Valentine's lofty refinement, which would naturally jar upon her nature of the streets. For her pathos, her better impulses, which had touched him and led him to sympathy with her, were perhaps only stars in a mind that must be a dust-heap of horrible memories and coarse thoughts.
Soon the second note will be silent altogether, and the single call will sound over the valley like the curfew bell of spring. Who, I thought, would not fix these fleeting moments of beauty if he could? Who would not keep the cuckoo's twin shout floating for ever over summer fields and the blackbird for ever fluting his thanksgiving after summer showers?
