Seriously, I hope you will permit me to take this opportunity to say that I deplore, as must all right-minded and clear-thinking men, the occasional petty criticisms which attribute to you some selfish motive for the honest and noble stand you have taken concerning the importance of immediate action and of a widespread, far-reaching, and generally effective movement looking toward, not the conservation, but the restoration, and permanent preservation of American soils.
"Well," said Deacon Starbuck, president of the Stock Bank, "you surely have a clear-thinking business head among your gifts." There was a distinct split in the views of the Board.
If you will read the biographies in the Congressional Directory, you will see that with a very few exceptions the New Englanders are the only men who come back here to both Houses term after term. They practically are here for life; and the reason is that they belong to the same hard-headed, clear-thinking, unyielding, and puritanically upright race as the men who elect them to office.
For unless there is security here at home there cannot be lasting peace in the world. One of the great American industrialists of our day a man who has rendered yeoman service to his country in this crisis recently emphasized the grave dangers of "rightist reaction" in this Nation. All clear-thinking businessmen share his concern.
Our commander, Colonel Moore, always brave and able; and our captains, Henry Lindsay, and Edgar Barker, and George Jenness, and David Payne, with the shrewd, courageous scout, Allison Pliley, and the undaunted, clear-thinking, young lieutenant, Frank Stahl.
Prentiss had not related a single anecdote of the front, nor alluded to the fact that she was a Red Cross nurse. But she and Kate Terriss sat up until midnight. They were both women capable of seizing those rare opportunities for service that flit past so many intelligent women lacking initiative, and here was one that the most clear-thinking man would have envied.
T. A. Buck now, wife of the head of the firm, and partner in the most successful skirt manufactory in the country. But the hard-working, clear-thinking, sane-acting habits of those fifteen years still clung. Perhaps this explained why every machine-girl in the big, bright shop back of the offices raised adoring eyes when Emma entered the workroom.
Has not this been the secret of the spread of the Gospel? The simplicity of the whole thing, and the power of it, grow upon us as we study them. "For clear-thinking ethical natures," writes a modern scholar, "for natures such as those of Jesus and St. Paul, it is a downright necessity to separate heaven and hell as distinctly as possible.
He did not know why he had consented to receive her, unless it was because he knew that they would meet inevitably sooner or later. He felt very able to meet her cool, and hard and clear-thinking. It was early yet. A wintry sunlight rested on his neatly ordered table, and he could smile at the idea that in a few hours he would begin to be afraid again. She had made no appointment.
" and I maintain, gentlemen, that my opponent, in advocating such a policy as that which he has had the the yes, the effrontery to lay before a clear-thinking and broad-minded Stoneleigh audience last night, has shown himself to be no wiser in his generation, no better or more statesmanlike in character, than than what shall we say? than" I glanced at the paper on the table "the Old Lady of Dippleton!"
