In passing from the prison de la Conciergerie to the Place de la Greve, where the execution took place, Couriol, placed beside Lesurques in the cart, cried out to the people in a loud voice, "Citoyens, I am guilty! I am guilty! but Lesurques is innocent."

As we passed out of the station, the first object to strike our eyes was a flaming poster addressed to "Citoyens," and containing one of the manifestoes which the Communist government was continually issuing. Of course we made an early call on Mr. Washburn.

The Opera Comique gave several performances of familiar operas each week, rendered patriotic by the recitation of the Marseillaise by Madame Chenal clothed in the national colors with a mighty Roman sword with which to emphasize "Aux armes, citoyens!"

It is a notable thing that the most violent language is held by individuals who have never been known to fight for the Republic. They could speak no otherwise if they wish to render her hateful. Citoyens, less talk, say I, and more work! It is with shot and shell and not with shouting that France will be saved. One-half the cellars of the Section have not been dug up.

Why an elector should vote for a man because he has an ugly face, I am not aware; but the Citizen Maronini seems to be under the impression that, from a fellow-feeling at least, all ugly men will do so; and perhaps he is right. Another candidate commences his address: "Citoyens, je suis le representant du go ahead." In the clubs last night everyone was talking, and no one was listening.

He took his place at the head of the table; and, fixing on the group eyes that emitted a cold gleam through the spectacles, thus spoke: "Messieurs, or Citoyens, which ye will I no longer call ye confreres you have disobeyed or blundered my instructions. On such an occasion disobedience and blunder are crimes equally heinous." Angry murmurs. "Silence! Do not add mutiny to your other offences.

He left his trenches shouting, "Vive la France! En avant! Aux armes, mes citoyens! A bas le Boche!" "Attention! Are you ready? Fire!" commanded our General. Bing! bang! a veritable tornado of over-ripe tomatoes deluged the astonished oncomers, who hesitated an instant and then fell back.

The President then proceeded to a brief examination of the rest of the accused, taking them in the order in which they sat on the tiers of benches. One, a man named Navette, pleaded that he could not have plotted in prison where he had only spent four days. The President observed that the point deserved to be considered, and begged the citoyens of the jury to make a note of it.

To the First Syndic, May 12, 1763. Grimm's Corr. Lit., iv. 235. For Rousseau's opinion of his book's companion at the stake, see Corr., iii. 442. Streckeisen, ii. 526. There appears to be no doubt that Rousseau was wrong in attributing to Vernes the Sentimens des Citoyens. Corr., iv. 204. Conf., xii. 259.

Naturally, these uncompromising views did not meet with favour from the "citoyens membres du Club de la Fraternite Universelle," and Balzac was not elected a member of the Assemblee Nationale.
