Chalmers's force was composed of six regiments and two battalions, and though I have been unable to find any returns from which to verify his actual numbers, yet, from the statements of prisoners and from information obtained from citizens along his line of march, it is safe to say that he had in the action not less than five-thousand men. Chalmers's manner, the determined way in which he gives himself up to his subject, or lays about him and buffets sceptics and gainsayers, arrests attention in spite of every other circumstance, and fixes it on that, and that alone, which excites such interest and such eagerness in his own breast!

The words seem to startle, like an electric shock, the whole audience. Very likely they did: but we should regret to see a bishop, or even a dean, have recourse to such means of producing an impression. But probably the article which was most influential in perpetuating the ill-repute in which she stood with her contemporaries, is the sketch of her life given in Chalmers's "Biographical Dictionary." The papers and many books of the day soon passed out of sight, but the Dictionary was long used as a standard work of reference.

Chalmers's argument to show the ease with which a country may recover the effects of a disastrous war is highly praised by J. S. Mill as the first sound explanation of the facts. Chalmers's position, however, is radically different from the position of either James or J. S. Mill.

A hundred little circumstances of voice and manner even of appearance and dress combine to give his oratory its overwhelming power. And where manner is everything, difference in manner is a total difference. Nor does manner affect only the less educated and intelligent class of hearers.
