"None of the great people go there?" keenly queried Hawke. "Not even the fine ladies," laughed Ram Lal. "The old fellow may have his own memories of the past. He trusts no one. The girl is only a bulbul in a golden cage and with no one to sing to." Hawke cut short Ram Lal's flowery figures. "Does the Swiss woman trade with you?" he demanded.

"Claudius Bombarnac, of Bordeaux, is delighted to be on the same road as " "Fulk Ephrinell, of the firm of Strong, Bulbul & Co., of New York City, New York, U.S.A." And he really added U.S.A. We were mutually introduced. I a traveler in news, and he a traveler in In what? That I had to find out. The conversation continues.

I leaned over and placed my ear timidly against the outer panel. There was no sound of breathing. The products of the house of Strong, Bulbul & Co., of New York, could not be more noiseless in their boxes. A fear seizes upon me the fear of seeing all my reporter's hopes vanish. Was I deceived on board the Astara? That respiration, that sneeze; had I dreamed it all?

The only other species of bulbul commonly seen in the hills is a very different bird. The bulbuls that we have been considering are inoffensive little birds which lead quiet and respectable lives. Not so the black bulbuls. These are aggressive, disreputable-looking creatures which go about in disorderly, rowdy gangs.

"Breakfast?" say I. "I have had it," he replies. "And your cases?" "I have still twenty-nine to get down to the steamer. But, pardon, I have not a moment to lose. When a man represents the firm of Strong, Bulbul & Co., who send out every week five thousand cases of their goods " "Go, go, Monsieur Ephrinell, we will meet on board. By the by, you have not met our traveling companion?"

George is a gentleman, and has very good friends, and good pluck too. Lady Betty Bulbul is very fond of Clara; and Tom Bulbul, who took George's message to Heeltap, is always hanging about the studio.

At sunset the bird began its usual tone; but the prince suspecting some deceit, forbore to speak, till at length the Bulbul retired to his cage, and fell asleep; when watching the opportunity, the prince darted upon it, and fastened the door. The bird awoke at the noise, and seeing himself caught, said, "Thou hast won the prize, O glorious son of a mighty sultan!"

As a flower in a garden, such a woman would rank as the sovereign rose; as a bird, she would be the bulbul, the sweetest of singers, and in beauty, a heron with throat of snow, and wings of pink and scarlet; as a star, she would be the first of the evening, and the last to pale in the morning nay, she would be a perpetual morning.

Was it from a strain in the Finsbury blood sometimes alluded to by customers? At least, when he presented himself before the station-master, his salaam was truly Oriental, palm-trees appeared to crowd about the little office, and the simoom or the bulbul but I leave this image to persons better acquainted with the East.
