I walked on with the rest, getting separated, for the moment, from my friend the black- eyed man. I saw him talking with two other men, and a little later saw Mr. Snider and Mr. Bowditch whispering together and glancing in my direction. Well, I thought I was departing from Rogers's Island, and from Snider, for good and all. You would hardly believe how I got left behind.
The latter route was decidedly the easiest, because all the inland tribes were friendly, while the tribes in the direction of the Zambesi were inimical, and I should now be obliged to lead a party, which the Batoka of that country view as hostile invaders, through an enemy's land; but, as the prospect of permanent water-conveyance was good, I decided on going down the Zambesi, and keeping on the north bank, because, in the map given by Bowditch, Tete, the farthest inland station of the Portuguese, is erroneously placed on that side.
J. Harvey Bowditch couldn't have put the people to sleep. By sending the Deacon and the gold nuggets ahead, the procession was formed again for the wharf. The band stayed in the yard, playing tune after tune, and enjoying themselves immensely. The "May Queen" was lying at one side of the wharf, so Mr. Snider, the Deacon, and Mr.
Indeed, for us all it is true that age loses nothing of its dignity or respect when it accepts the sentiments and sports of youth and childhood. But above all should the teacher remember the common remark of La Place, in his Celestial Mechanics, and the observation of Dr. Bowditch upon it.
There is almost as great a difference between a young woman who takes all things upon trust, scarcely knowing that she can use her own powers in the investigation of truth, and one who has been, like my worthy and venerable correspondent, in the habit of observing and reasoning seventy or eighty years, as there is between a Sam Patch and a Bowditch or a Hottentot and a Newton.
Some of his countrymen, accordingly, conceived the plan of a national testimonial to the philanthropist, which should ensure to him during the rest of his life a competence. A committee having this end in view was organized March 28, 1866, at the house of Dr. Henry I. Bowditch.
Better than any sailing, however, is rowing in an open boat at sunset or by moonlight, with one or two friends. Their climate is equally remarkable, and Doctor Bowditch considered it, from its soothing and also stimulating quality, one of the finest in the world, and much the best on the Atlantic coast.
Another mutter from Snider; the Professor laughed and spoke again: "It won't make a bit of difference. Bowditch has got all those hayseeds hypnotised. That's where you come in, with your pink whiskers. ... Say, that door's open!" There was a sound of footsteps, and the soft closing of a door. Presently another door closed, outside, and I heard the two men come upstairs.
With this instrument the pupils may take their own and each other's temperatures, and it will be found that whatever the season of the year or the temperature of the room, the thermometer in the mouth will record about 99 degrees F. Care must, of course, be taken to keep the thermometer in the mouth till it ceases to rise, and to read while it is still in position." Professor H. P. Bowditch.
I'm so excited and I think Chris was such a duck to get hold of him. I was translating it, you know, and Bowditch, who was here for dinner last night, told me he'd place it, if I finished it. And now I can talk it over with Henrici himself thanks to Chris! Chris met my man at the club, and told him about me, and he said he would be charmed.
