The second edition of Ainsworth's Version was printed in 1617, a third in 1618; the fourth, in London in 1639, was a folio; and the sixth, in Amsterdam in 1644, was an octavo. A little 24mo copy is in the Essex Institute in Salem, and an octavo is in the Prince Library, now in the custody of the Public Library of the City of Boston. The latter copy has a note in it written by the Rev.
"How many books did you and Bert gather up this morning, Dot?" "Fifty-three volumes besides Miss Ainsworth's. Those were already over here in the shed. Where is Archie?" "He and Winifred are coming. They were going to bring a rug Win's mother said we could have, and two lamps." "They will enjoy carrying them over this hot afternoon!" said Bess, deftly hemming a curtain.
Shargar was at length deposited upon the little bit of hearthrug which adorned rather than enriched the room, with Robert's plaid of shepherd tartan around him, and an Ainsworth's dictionary under his head for a pillow. 'Whan I close my een, I'm no sure 'at I'm no i' the inside o' yer auld luckie-daiddie's kilt.
It is pleasing, too, this "Ainsworth's Version," aside from any thought of its historic associations; its square pages of diversified type are well printed, and have a quaint unfamiliar look which is intensely attractive, and to which the odd, irregular notes of music, the curiously ornamented head and tail pieces, and the occasional Hebrew or Greek letters add their undefinable charm.
Ainsworth's patient toil as I show his elaborate preparations: When I take down my "American Cyclopaedia" and borrow instruction from the learned articles of Dr. Kneeland, I cease to regret that his indefatigable and intelligent industry was turned into a broader channel. And what can I say too cordial of my long associated companion and friend, Dr.
'This was the only thing wanted, said Desmoulin, who generally had some humorous remark in readiness for every situation. * The French dramatic adaptation of Ainsworth's 'Jack Sheppard. The allusion to the fog roused M. Zola from his contemplation. 'But where is the Savoy Hotel, where I stayed in '93? he inquired. 'It must be very near here. I pointed it out to him, and he was astonished.
Most of them had raked up Ainsworth's past to considerable journalistic purpose: it had been an easy matter to turn up old files, to recount the fall of the Hearth and Home, to tell anew the story of the privations of the humble investors whose small hoards had gone in the crash; it had been easy, too, to set out again the history of Ainsworth's arrest, trial, and fate.
He is named to give him his titles in full 'Honnête homme Mauger Lessarmentrer, clerc non marier, appariteur de la cour archiepiscopalle de Rouen. The name of the chief torturer of the good city of Rouen, Mauger, has a gruesome ring about it it reminds one of the headsman in Harrison Ainsworth's novel of the Tower of London.
In the meantime, your kindness will be glad to learn of the prosperity of my poems in my own country. I am more than satisfied in my most sanguine hope for them, and a little surprised besides. The critics have been good to me. 'Blackwood' and 'Tait' have this month both been generous, and the 'New Monthly' and 'Ainsworth's Magazine' did what they could.
"He can't be any more gloomy about it than she was, and maybe he'll do what we want." The judge was not in his office, so they sat down to wait in the stuffy room where dusty books and papers sprawled and spilled over desk, table and the top of a big black safe. Algernon attached himself to a grimy magazine, having first jotted down Miss Ainsworth's gift in his ever-present note-book.
