South of the Cape we lost two dogs; they went overboard one dark night when the ship was rolling tremendously. We had a coal-bunker on the port side of the after-deck, reaching up to the height of the bulwarks; probably these fellows had been practising boarding drill, and lost their balance. We took precautions that the same thing should not happen again.

The immediate deck seemed deserted; but he was sure that some one was keeping the watch, and probably near the point where he was, that is to say, where access to the deck was easiest. But the fog and the darkness afforded him protection, as he climbed over the gunwhale and, without making a sound, moved toward the stern, crossed the after-deck and found the wheel.

Probably without being conscious of it, Professor Toussaint too frequently referred to the United States as the dollar land. On the after-deck the passengers in unrestrained jollity, had begun to dance. It was Hans Füllenberg, the ever vivacious Berlinese, who had taken the lead. Inspired by the Strauss waltz that the band was playing he had engaged the lady in the fur coat.

I accompanied my father to a seamen's outfitting place, and he spent a good part of his two hundred buying needful things for me ... shirts of strong material ... heavy underwear ... oilskins ... boots ... strong thread and needles ... and a dunnage bag to pack it all away in.... We stood together on the after-deck again, my father and I. "Now I must be going," he remarked, trying to be casual.

"All right," said she. Bobby led her past the scornful Angus to the narrow deck. "This is the engine room," he announced out of his new knowledge. But Celia did not care for it. "It's awfully dirty," said she. This was a new point of view; and Bobby marvelled. However, she was delighted with the after-deck, and the wake, and the attendant waves.

Early in the morning I saw rings in the dew-laden grass and was told that they had been made by the 'little people, dancing. You, evidently, have caught a fairy prince and he does your bidding. Within an hour you have converted the after-deck into fairy-land; you have " Just then, out of the blue darkness that lay between the yacht and Venice, burst the lights of a gondola.

It was the last night of their voyage together. The Ruggleses were to leave the ship the next morning at Algiers, where they intended to remain for some time. "Would you mind going to the after-deck?" he asked. "These people walking about fidget me," he added rather irritably. She rose, and they made their way aft. John drew a couple of chairs near to the rail.

Her bows were deep in the water, but her after-deck still dry. Righted: but only for a moment, long enough to let her crew come pouring wildly up on deck, with cries and prayers, and rush aft to the poop, where, under the flag of Spain, stood the tall captain, his left hand on the standard-staff, his sword pointed in his right. "Back, men!" they heard him cry, "and die like valiant mariners."

"And am still. Tatho's fleet was sent by Dason and his friends to the sea-floor, and so we took this stinking galley to finish the voyage in, seeing that it was the only craft left afloat." The port-captain was roving his eye over the group of us who stood on the after-deck. "I fear me, captain, that you'll have but a dangerous reception. I do not see my Lord Deucalion.

So it happened that five minutes later he found himself at the heels of his chief shaking hands mechanically with a dozen officers, while his eyes kept peering beyond them to where, on the after-deck, the smiling group of women stood expectant.
