"The Maze" is the best story in the volume, and makes it clear that a brilliant short story writer was lost in France during the war. I have called attention to many of these stories in previous years, but now that they are reprinted as a group I must reaffirm my belief that few among the younger English short story writers have such a command of dramatic finality as Miss Wylie.

Jackson Wylie placed the heel of his right shoe upon the favorite corn of his left foot and bore down upon it heavily. He must be getting into his dotage, he reflected, or else the idea of a five-million-dollar job had him rattled. Of course Sir Thomas would not use his title. At the rear desk he had his card blown up through the tube to "Mr.

Wylie, catching her hand. "And perhaps, again, I won't." "You will, dear," urged Mrs. Wylie, trying to draw Agatha, who passively resisted, closer to her. "For my sake. To oblige your mother, Agatha. You won't refuse me, dearest?" Agatha laughed indulgently at her parent, who had long ago worn out this form of appeal. Then she turned to Henrietta, and said, "How is your caro sposo?

"Demn him!" he skirled, following the solid march of his enemy with fiery eyes. Never before had his deaconship been heard to swear. Tam Wylie laughed at the shrill oath till his eyes were buried in his merry wrinkles, a suppressed snirt, a continuous gurgle in the throat and nose, in beaming survey the while of the withered old creature dancing in his rage. Demn Wylie too what was he laughing at!

After packing up our few things, and putting them upon the horses, I gave the bridles to Wylie to hold, whilst I advanced alone with my rifle towards the two natives. They were now tolerably near, each carrying a double-barrelled gun, which was pointed towards me, elevated across the left arm and held by the right hand. As I attempted to approach nearer they gradually retreated.

"I could have gotten £1,600,000 to start with, but by gad, Sir Thomas is the coldest-blooded thing I ever went against! I I can't help but admire him." Having shown a deplorable lack of foresight, Mr. Wylie determined to make up for it by an ample display of hindsight.

For some time the travellers lived upon dried horse flesh, with a kangaroo, or a fish, as a little change. Wylie continued to eat immoderately, though often rolling upon the ground, and crying out, "Mendyat," or ill. One night he appeared to be in a very ill-humor, and Mr. Eyre tried to find out the reason. At last Wylie said in an angry tone, "The dogs have eaten the skin."

In the afternoon Wylie took the rifle to shoot some of the swans and ducks around us, but was not successful. I remained at the camp, breaking down and clearing a passage amongst the shrubs and trees which grew in the rocky bed of the watercourse, to enable us to get our horses readily across to-morrow.

The 'Wylie' is torn off but 'John G. is left. And now the question is " Ruth's laughter could no longer be restrained. "Oh, Graham, she borrowed it." "Borrowed it!" repeated the amazed Graham. "Well, I like that." "She rushed down here the morning after you came and said she had an extra bed to make, and would we lend her a little bedding. Of course we didn't have any bedding to spare.

To prevent such a calamity, I mounted one of the strongest horses and pushed on by myself as rapidly as the heavy nature of the sands would allow, leaving Wylie at his own especial request to bring on the other horses. The people on board appeared to be busily engaged in clearing their cables which were foul, and did not observe me at all.
