We talk of our age's and the States' materialism and it is too true.

On went the charmed words, each a lantern flashed on thought, grave, poetic, telling of triumph, yet far removed from gross optimism, not without that strange, melancholy note sounding now and again amongst the age's crashing chords. Abruptly his voice fell, but presently with a lighter note he broke the silence in which his listeners gazed upon the stately vision he had conjured up.

She wept holy tears when he suffered, and when he was delighted her heart beat with pleasure. It was she who taught him that august prayer which is sacred in its simplicity to childhood. She is aged now; her wealth of brown hair is white with age's winter, her step is no longer quick, her eye has lost its lustre, and her hand is shaken with the palsy of lost vigor.

"Why don't you look better after your friend, Theo?" said her father one day when Barbara's chair was empty at dinner with his cold incisive voice, a little rasping now that the clutch of age's hand was beginning to close on his throat. "She doesn't mind me, papa," Theodora answered. "Do say something to her, mamma!" "'Tis not my business to reform other people's children," lady Ann returned.

And just as it gives again the age's consciousness of the delicious robe of earth, so, too, it gives again its sense of weariness and powerlessness and oppression. The nineteenth century had been loud with blare and rumors and the vibration of colossal movements, and man had apparently traversed vast distances and explored titanic heights and abysmal depths.

But how great is this itself! how many radii thus go out from the central point God! So far does thine eye reach, so clear is thine age's horizon! Son of time, choose, who shall be thy companion? Here is thy new career! with the greatest of thy time, fly thou before thy time's generation! Like twinkling Lucifer, shine thou in time's roseate morn. Yes, in knowledge lies Poetry's California!

I am convinced that nowhere so much as in the highest knowledge of all what the people above count knowledge will the fulfilment of the saying of our Lord, "Many first shall be last, and the last first," cause astonishment; that a man who has been leader of the age's opinion, may be immeasurably behind another whom he would have shut up in a mad-house.

Ours are wide vistas bathed in purest air Youth's outdoor pleasures, Age's indoor peace Where could we find a fairer home on earth Which we ourselves are free to make more fair?

They could not understand this. Reshid thought that it was very strange. He felt uneasy and doubtful. But Abdulla, after the first shock of surprise, with the old age's dislike for solving riddles, showed a becoming resignation. He remarked that the man was dead now at all events, and consequently no more dangerous.
