It was not beneath the dignity of the Meeting to raise money and purchase a cow, early in the eighteenth century, to "loan to the widow Irish," and at the close of the nineteenth century, the few Quakers and the many Irish and other "world's people" took part more than once in subscriptions by which the burden was borne, which had fallen upon some workingman or poorer neighbor through the death of horse or cow, or even to bear the expense incidental to the death of his child.

Every change which made it possible for the workingman to secure equal effects with smaller effort or to secure greater or better effects with equal effort counted as an economic gain, which was welcome to the market. For instance, throughout the history of industry we find the fundamental tendency to transpose all activities from the great muscles to the small muscles.

But while the very large establishments demonstrate by such reports only that they can find somewhere a fit place for every able workingman if they take enough trouble to seek for it, after all the essential element of the reports remains, that successful achievement depends upon personal mental traits which cannot be acquired by mere good will and training.

Do you remember, Pavel, you explained to me that as a man lives, so he also thinks, and that if the workingman says 'Yes, the master must say 'No, and if the workingman says 'No, the master, because of the nature of the beast, is bound to cry 'Yes. So you see, their natures are different one from the other. The muzhik has his nature, and the gentleman has his.

"You must contrive to learn what it was this workingman came about." "Yes, madame." "Has your mistress seemed preoccupied, uneasy, or afraid of the interview which she is to have to-day with the princess? She conceals so little of what she thinks, that you ought to know." "She has been as gay as usual. She has even jested about the interview!"

Some poor workingman more affected by my sarcasm than by the strength of my arguments may, perhaps, have concluded that property is the result of a perpetual Machiavelianism on the part of the governors against the governed, a deplorable error of which my book itself is the best refutation.

His father failed to succeed and disappeared back to Africa leaving the support of the child to the poor working mother. The child showed evidences of musical talent and a friendly workingman gave him a little violin. A musician glancing from his window saw a little dark boy playing marbles on the street with a tiny violin in one hand; he gave him lessons.

Beside him at the counter sat a young workingman, also eating frankfurters and drinking coffee. Now and then he gave a sidelong and supercilious glance at James's fine clothes. James caught one of the glances, and laughed good-naturedly. "These quick-lunch wagons are a mighty good idea," said he. The man grunted and took a swallow of coffee. "Where do you work?" asked James.

This is a higher average than the school-teacher or the stenographer receives; it is almost double the average wage of the shop girl, or the factory girl. It is, in fact, about as high as the usual income of the American workingman. It is true that the social position of the domestic worker is lower than that of the teacher, stenographer, or factory worker.

The large-hearted, delicate-souled woman felt nothing strange in the presence of the workingman, but, on the contrary, was comfortably aware of a being like her own, less privileged but more gifted, whose nearness was strength.
