When you first land you are decidedly struck by the great figure-heads of old war vessels, which are set up on the "quarter-deck" and in front of some of the buildings. There is one of the old Ganges there a mammoth wooden head of a very black negro. The size of it is startling. The officers have a charmingly comfortable ward-room and mess-room.

"Moreover," Dave told himself, bitterly, "Cantor, if he is the one who has done this contemptible thing, may yet devise a way clever enough to convict me, or at least to condemn me in the service." At dinner, before the first course was served, Commander Bainbridge ordered the ward-room doors closed after the attendants had passed outside.

The boat shoved off, the bell of the engine telegraph on the steamer resounded sharply, and the vessel resumed her interrupted voyage whilst the rowing boat was headed towards the destroyer. On board the latter vessel an officer met Desmond at the rail and piloted him to the ward-room. Almost before they got there, the destroyer was under way.

The breakfast call sounded, and in twos and threes the officers of the "Long Island," passed into the ward-room. John Carmody was provided with a seat beside the chaplain. "Darrin, you lucky dog!" called Lieutenant-Commander Denton, as soon as the officers were seated. "Am I really fortunate?" Dave smiled back.

He had a curious habit of undressing early, and then, having by this symbolic act laid aside the cares of the day, as elbow space was lacking in his own cabin, he would play in the open ward-room for an hour or more before turning in; always standing, and attired in a white night-shirt of flowing dimensions.

The ward-room appeared pleased to see me; Sebright's brother officers, in contrast to himself, took a boyish interest in my cruise; and much was talked of the Flying Scud; of how she had been lost, of how I had found her, and of the weather, the anchorage, and the currents about Midway Island.

However, there was nothing of the robustious, shiver-my-timbers, conventional sailor about him; his manner was somewhat reserved; he had a touch of gravity beyond his years; perhaps he had acquired it through being put at an early age in command of so many men; but it never forsook him not even in the ward-room, among his brother officers. He seemed shy, also.

"'Tis the end of a lovely craft!" he said, loud enough to be heard by those beneath. Then he appeared in the air, and sunk into the sea "The last signal was from the ward-room," added the dauntless and dexterous mariner, as he rose from the water, and, shaking the brine from his head, he took his place on the stage "Would to God the wind would blow, for we have need of greater distance!"

He was sent for, and it was settled that McLane and I were to conduct this important mission, and the commodore enjoined on us complete secrecy, so as to insure success, and he especially cautioned us against being pumped by his ward-room officers, Chapman, Lewis, Wise, etc., while on board his ship.

An hour before the captain's dinner was ready, the much envied suit was brought aft, and duly displayed on Mr Pigtop's chest. The ward-room officers, or at least those of them with whom he could take that liberty, were invited out to view it. It was pronounced, for ship-tailoring, excellent. Pigtop's elation was great. So was Josh Daunton's; but all in a quiet, submissive way.
