Once when I was in favor of branching out and producing a legitimate three-act play which I happened to run across a rare thing from the French he well, I won't go into it but this thing to-night that bauble of my mother's it it's the climax of a lifetime of such flea bites a trifle hardly worth the mentioning, and yet it's the most utter the most damnable "

I put it to a German post-office clerk once a man I had been boring for months. I said: "You think I write these letters these short stories, these three-act plays on purpose to annoy you. Do let me try to get the idea out of your head. Personally, I hate work hate it as much as you do.

Her "Pardon Breton," "Noel des Marins," and "Angelus," for orchestra, are also worthy of mention, as well as her set of six "Poemes Evangeliques." She is now at work upon a three-act lyric drama. Augusta Mary Ann Holmes was born at Paris in 1847. Of Irish parentage, she afterward became naturalized as a Frenchwoman.

Admirable as are the other acts, one is almost inclined to agree with Dumas that an author ought not to embark upon a theme unless he foresees a better way out of it than this. It should be noted, too, that The Benefit of the Doubt is a three-act play, and that, in a play laid out on this scale, a whole act of anticlimax is necessarily disproportionate.

Kenny is a writer of a class which, in our time, is at the very bottom of the literary scale. He is a dramatist. Most of the farces, and three-act plays, which have succeeded during the last eight or ten years, are, I am told, from his pen. Heaven knows that, if they are the farces and plays which I have seen, they do him but little honour. However, this man is one of our great comic writers.

He had no club to go to at that time, so he went and read the papers, and drank coffee at a cigar divan until it was late enough to dine, and after dinner tried to drown his care by going to see one of those anomalous productions a 'three-act burlesque' at a neighbouring theatre, which he sat through with a growing gloom, in spite of the pretty faces and graceful dances which have now, with some rare exceptions, made plot and humour so unnecessary.

It was followed by a divertisement for the revival of Adam's "Corsaire" , the ballet "Coppelia" , a three-act opera "Le Roi l'a dit" , and the exquisite ballet in three acts and five tableaux, "Sylvia" , with which Theodore Thomas has made American audiences familiar. His opera "Lakme" was written in 1879.

Composition was not neglected, and a piano concerto of fair success was the result of this period. At this time her dramatic efforts began, and the three-act opera, "Die Göttin von Sais," was the first result. The music of this work was excellent, but the libretto lacked action, and no stage performance was ever given.

This is a three-act work called "Azara;" the libretto has been published by the Riverside Press, and is to be translated into German. This has not yet been performed. Being, unfortunately, an American grand opera, it takes very little acuteness of foresight to predict a long wait before it is ever heard.
