Christianity fought paganism with the arguments of the disciples of Socrates with Socratic arguments; modern philosophies and creeds are all impregnated with Socraticism.
By this reference to Socrates, Keimer meant to slap Benjamin's Socratic method of argument, about which he talked much. "Can't you see it?" "And it ought to settle the appetite, also; and the quantity and kind of food that goes into the stomach," rejoined Benjamin, quickly. Keimer was a large eater never more satisfied than when devouring a good dinner that was exactly to his taste.
My system was a sort of Socratic heathen philosophy a moral code calculated to take a man tolerably safe through a quiet world, but not to extricate him from a labyrinth of long-practised iniquity. The thoughtless and vicious conduct of my companions became to me a source of serious reflection.
And from this point of view one may discern the significance of that doctrine of humility which belongs equally to Socratic thinking and Christian believing. It follows, too, that we need not laboriously push and foist upon the young our faith and experience.
Socratic fashion, Falconer asked him a question, and was answered; followed it with another, which, after a little hesitation, was likewise answered; then asked a third, the ready answer to which involved such a flagrant contradiction of the first, that the poor sorrowful weaver burst into a laugh of delight at the discomfiture of his tormentor.
Another of the Socratic circle turned in a different direction. Xenophon, an exile from his country, a brilliant soldier and adventurer as well as a man of letters, is perhaps the first Greek on record who openly lost interest in the city. He thought less about cities and constitutions than about great men and nations, or generals and armies.
In this he used the Socratic method, leading the pupil by a series of questions to the discovery of the incorrectness of his reasoning or the falsity of his grounds. By this process the students were led to question their own reasoning, to think clearly and to express their thoughts accurately. Dr. McGuffey once told a pupil that he had preached three thousand sermons and had never written one.
Our agreements or divergences in this region do not touch science; they concern only friendship and unanimity. All our proofs are, as they say in Spain, pure conversation; and as the purpose and best result can be only to kindle intelligence and propagate an ideal art, the method should be Socratic, genial, literary. In these matters, the alternative to imagination is not science but sophistry.
That wouldn't be so bad, but my employers are beginning to hint that I'm not so lively as I was once and that a younger man would fill the job better. It's only a question of time when I'll be a leading member of the Down and Out Club. Then it'll be the Bay for mine." Our friend, whom we call Mr. Socratic, butted into the conversation right here. "Pretty tough luck!" he said.
Conversion is something we do; it is also something else, working within us, if we will let it, helping us to do; hence it is something done for us. Now, this experience of conversion is passing out of Christian life and preaching under humanistic influence. We are accepting the Socratic dictum that knowledge is virtue. Hence we blur the distinction between the Christian and the non-Christian.
