So, this morning, I fastened up the door of the hen-house, and only left open the little sliding door, by which the fowls go in to roost; and then, after you were up, I watched behind the trees, and saw Tommy come out, and go to the hen-house. He tried the door, and finding it fast, crept into the hen-house by the little sliding-door.
"There's only one way. Tell the old man, Nathan, when you've made up your mind to accept my offer." Without waiting for a reply Jack pushed the sliding-door in its place, and once more Jasper found himself in the dark. Three days and nights passed, and Jasper was still in confinement. Three times a day Nathan came to bring him his meals.
As soon as consciousness returned he looked around him with astonishment and wonder. "Where am I?" A few rays of light entered at the sliding-door above, and to this his eyes were naturally drawn. Here was another puzzle. He explored his memory, and could recall no such place as this. He had never before been in such a room.
These small dormitories were separated by partitions of planks into bedrooms with one or several beds, and shut away from the outer SKAAL either by a sliding-door in the wall or by an ordinary door shutting with a hasp. Sometimes only a hanging covered the opening."
Through a slight opening between the sliding-door she looked, with tightly clasped hands and parted lips, at her lover. At first she was conscious of little else except the overwhelming truth that before her was one she had believed dead. Then again surged up with blinding force the old feeling which had possessed her when she saw him last when he had impressed his farewell kiss upon her lips.
At the word of ribald endearment by which he named the sheriff, a passing fierceness hardened the officer's face, and the new yell they gave was less playful. Waiting no more explanations, they swarmed against the locomotive, and McLean pulled himself up on the step. The loud talking fell at a stroke to let business go on, and in this silence came the noise of a sliding-door.
Mechanically he packed up the few remaining articles, to be called for in the morning, and then leaned heavily against a pillar, intending to rest a moment before going out into the night alone. Some one pushed back the sliding-door a little and passed into the room. Through the opening he caught a glimpse of the gay scene within.
An emergency switch? With a forward scramble, Ross swung into one of the radiating side corridors. The sliding-door panels along it were all closed; he could detect no sounds behind them. But the vibration in the ship's walls had returned to its steady beat. Now the Terran realized the folly of his move. He was more securely trapped here than he had been in the control cabin.
But there's an old saying that the darkest hour is just before the dawn, and deliverance was nearer than Jasper supposed. On the fourth day, at noon, Jasper heard steps ascending the stairs. He supposed it to be the old man, with his dinner, and he looked up listlessly as the sliding-door was opened.
The next morning breakfast was brought to him about eight o'clock. It was not till ten that the sliding-door was opened and the face of Jack appeared at the opening. "Well, boy, how do you like your quarters?" he asked, with a disagreeable smile. "Not at all," answered Jasper. "Why do you keep me here?" "We had reasons for putting you here." "What were they?"
