The difference between success and failure in this country is just the length of time it takes to pull a trigger and Silent is fast with a gun. He's the root of the outlaw power. We may kill a hundred men, but till he's gone we've only mowed the weeds, not pulled them. But what's the use of talking? One second will tell the tale when I stand face to face with Jim Silent and we go for our six-guns.

"We're savin' our strength they'll be plenty of fast ridin' to do latah." The Kid could not resist the temptation to break into song. His soft chant rose above the faint whisper of the desert wind: "Oh, theah's jumpin' beans and six-guns south o' Rio, And muy malo hombres by the dozen, We're a-watchin' out fo' trouble south o' Rio, And when it comes, some lead will be a-buzzin'."

If I want to get those six-guns, I want 'em fast an' I want 'em sure not 'bout ten yards away wheah I can't git my hands on 'em!" Their gnawing hunger drove them all into agreeing to the masquerade. Drew could not recall his last really full meal. Just thinking about food made a warm, sickish taste rise in his mouth.

Sudden speaking, and a loud voice, indeed, was hardly safe. Someone cursed at his ill-luck as Pierre entered, and a dozen hands reached for six-guns. In such a place one had to be prepared. Pierre remembered with quick dismay that he was not armed. All his life the straight black gown had been weapon enough to make all men give way before him.

Partly to escape this uproar he worked his way to the quieter room at the back of the saloon. It was almost as crowded as the bar, but here no one spoke except for an occasional growl. A bullet, spent and far short, dropped away to their left, sending up a geyser of sand. "I guess we'll fight now," Kid Wolf said, drawing his six-guns. The grim-faced fighter from Texas knew the ways of the Apaches and was prepared for what followed. It was not his first encounter with renegade red men of the Southwest. He was also aware of what awaited them if they were taken captive.

But day after day he came down along the edges of the scattered woods where the cattle grazed on the forest lands and looked over to where the Holding lay like a greener spot on the green stretches. He thought of her, living in this feudal hold, mistress of her riders, her cattle, and her wonderful racing horses of the Finger Marks, sweet, fair, wholesome with the six-guns at her slender hips!

"I'm trustin' to you boys to stand back of me all through," said the sheriff with a sort of whine, "but I'm thinkin' that we won't have no trouble. When we see him we won't stop for no questions to be asked, but turn loose with our six-guns an' shoot him down like a dog. He's not human an' he don't deserve Oh, God!"

They were both sandy-complexioned and they both chewed tobacco quite noticeably, and when they sat down in their shirt sleeves to eat, Lorraine had seen irregular humps in their hip pockets which must be six-guns; though why they should carry them in their pockets instead of in holster belts buckled properly around their bodies and sagging savagely down at one side and swinging ferociously when they walked, Lorraine could not imagine.

The women, it seems, are crazy to see a real Montana dance, and watch the cowboys chasse around the room in their chaps and spurs and big hats, and with two or three six-guns festooned around their middles, the way you see them in pictures.
