The porosity of rock is not always a criterion of its permeability; a very fine grained marble, containing about 0.6 per cent. cell space, transmitted water and oil more freely than a shale that would hold 4 per cent. of its bulk of water. If the above conclusions hold on a large scale as on the small, they may aid in explaining the diminished flow of oil wells.
Usually they occur as massive or nodular limestones, underlaid by a fine shale or flag-stone; and in other cases, as in the noted Denbighshire sandstones, as a coarse grit of very great thickness. This grit forms mountain ranges through North and South Wales, and is generally marked by the great sterility of the soil where it occurs.
Where limestone-making animals abound, they so increase the rate of deposition that the proportion of the mineral material in the growing strata is very much reduced; it may, indeed, become as small as one per cent of the mass. In this case we may say that the deposit of limestone grew a hundred times as fast as the intervening beds of shale.
A fairy tale about chasing Echo to her hiding-place. Echo is the voice of a reflection in a mirror. A house to be built over a natural spring of inflammable gas, and to be constantly illuminated therewith. What moral could be drawn from this? It is carburetted hydrogen gas, and is cooled from a soft shale or slate, which is sometimes bituminous, and contains more or less carbonate of lime.
Ten minutes more and the note was lying neglected on the bureau, and Angela stood at her window, gazing out over dreary miles of almost desert landscape, of rock and shale and sand and cactus, with eyes from which the light had fled, and a new, strange trouble biting at her girlish heart. Confound No. 4 and Norah Shaughnessy! It had been arranged that when the Plumes were ready to start, Mrs.
I heard of it yesterday on the Bench. Lord Shale, our new Lord-Lieutenant, brought it down. A trick they played the fellow 'bout a Dauphin. Serve him right. You heard anything 'bout it, Harry? I had not. 'But I tell ye there is a Dauphin mixed up with him. A Dauphin and Mr. Ik Dine! 'Mr. Ik Dine! exclaimed the captain, perplexed.
We readjusted our packs so they could not slip and overbalance us; we measured and re-measured with our eyes just where those steps would fall; we took a deep breath and we hustled. Behind us the fine shale slid sullenly in a miniature avalanche that cascaded over the edge. Our "weight had carried us through!" In camp, we found that Harry's shooting had landed a kid, so that we had a goat apiece.
If MacDonald had escaped, and they had feared a possible pursuit, some one would have watched the bridge. The trail was easy to follow now. Sand and grassy earth had replaced rock and shale; he could make out the imprints of feet many of them and they led in the direction of a piece of timber that apparently edged a valley running to the east and west.
The temptation was big, but I held my own, and now I've no fear of meeting anyone in Heaven or Hell. I've told you all.... "Not quite all. There's one thing more. The thought of Junia Shale made me want to burn the second will, and I almost did it; but I'm glad I didn't." "If you had, and had married her, you wouldn't have been happy. You can't be fooling a wife and be safe."
Lady Shale and Hilda meant, no doubt, to give the Rocketts a good fright, and then contemptuously pardon them. She, in any case, would return to London without delay, and make no more trouble. A pity she had come to the lodge at all; it was no place for one of her spirit and her attainments. In the morning she packed.
