At the first hearing Montgomery Blair argued the case for Dred Scott, and Senator Geyer, of Missouri, and ex-Attorney-General Reverdy Johnson, of Maryland, for the claimant. At the second hearing Mr. Blair and George Ticknor Curtis, of Boston, argued the case on behalf of Dred Scott, and Mr. Greyer and Mr. Johnson again made the argument for the claimant.

The morning after Abel Reverdy had finished his work at the Cross Roads, and had returned to the cares patiently awaiting him at home he rode his claybank so hesitantly toward the Squire's cabin that his desire to stop and talk was plain, and Braile called to him: "Well, Abel, what do they think of the Prophet over at Wilkins's? Many converts? Many dipped or sprinkled, as the case required?"

I tell you it was a sight, Squire; you ought to 'a' been there yourself." Reverdy grinned at his notion.

It was something to see the brother of the woman I loved; but I must find Zoe if possible. Reverdy was off somewhere with Douglas. Douglas was working upon the plan of introducing the political convention system in Illinois, as it prevailed in New York. He wished to step from the state's attorneyship into the legislatureship. He had newspaper supporters; he had many friends, as well as many foes.

"Then it is not your duty to be here," said her sister Euphemia, somewhat distinctly. But Mrs. Flandin was bound to "free her mind" of what was upon it. "I should think the Squire'd want Evan to hum," she went on. "It would be very nice if Evan could be in two places at once," Mrs. Reverdy owned conciliatingly. "Where is Captain Knowlton now?" asked Mrs. Boddington.

Reverdy Johnson is not here. The first day disgusted him, as he is a practitioner of law. Yet the best word of the trial has been his: "I, gentlemen, am a member of that body of legislators which creates courts-martial and major-generals!"

Brooks scrutinized my face with large, pensive eyes. After a silence he said: "You are the boss; but I want you to know that the will can stand. I will guarantee to win the case if there is one." "Can we see the farm?" I asked. "And my father's grave?" Mr. Brooks brought up his buggy and we were off. But first I wished to find Reverdy and give him Mrs. Spurgeon's message.

Reverdy with a gay laugh, "that picking blackberries was such a serious business. O dear! and it's only just eleven o'clock now. And I am so hungry!" "Eat blackberries," said Gertrude, who was doing it diligently. "But I want to carry some home." "You can buy 'em. We came for fun," was the cool answer. "Fun?" said Mrs.

Reverdy Johnson, Senator from Maryland, and suggested to him that the best way to escape a conflict was for the President to nominate some good man as Secretary of War whose confirmation by the Senate would fall within the provisions of the law, and named General J. D. Cox, then Governor of Ohio, whose term of office was drawing to a close, who would, I knew, be acceptable to General Grant and the army generally.

Diana was calm now, with a possession of herself which she marvelled at even then. Bringing her visitor into the little parlour, she placed herself again in her chair, with her face turned from the light. "And here I find you! O you beautiful creature!" Mrs. Reverdy burst out. "I declare, I don't wonder at anything!" and she laughed. The laugh grated terribly on Diana.
