One year I started with a lone newt and before the summer was over I had thirteen sunfish, pickerel, bass, minnows, catfish, carp, trout, more newts, pollywogs or tadpoles, five kinds of frogs, an eel and all sorts of bugs, waterbeetles and insects. I soon found that one kind of insect would kill another and that sometimes my specimens would grow wings over night and fly away.
"What a funny sight! I thought my babies grew fast, but these beat them." The world is a wonderful great big place And in it the young must roam To learn what their elders have long since learned There's never a place like home. It had been some time since Peter Rabbit had visited the Smiling Pool to watch the pollywogs.
"Come here, show off your spy-glass, Dan, and let us see some of your magnified pollywogs and annymalcumisms as you call 'em," said Jack, who felt so uncomfortable during this scene that he would have slipped away if Emil had not kept him. "So I will, take a squint at that and see what you think of it," said Dan, glad to show off his precious microscope.
"Sh! Don't say that out loud, Nell. That little wife is true as steel." "I don't care. My prophetic soul " Lee put in. "Prophetic pollywogs! Why, Helen, the girl is as simple and straightforward as a boy of twelve." "She seems that way, but I could see she was wonderfully attracted by Ben and his singing that night here."
"Billy Mink saw him, and that is why he is so anxious to find Little Joe Otter. He is planning to play some trick on Grandfather Frog as sure as pollywogs have tails!" exclaimed Jerry. Then his eyes began to twinkle as he added: "I think I'll have some fun myself." Without another word Jerry slipped down into the water and swam over to the big green lily-pad of Grandfather Frog.
Frisky Frog changed the chorus for her little ones because she knew well enough that her pollywogs never slept at night. At least I never saw any asleep at night of all those who swarm in black clumps there on the edge of Shiner's Pond in the moonlight. But I have not told you yet how Mrs. Frisky Frog sang the chorus. Wiggle wog Woggle wig Sing my pollywog A tune to every jig.
Water drawn cold from the pipes will sometimes kill the eggs. If all goes well, in a few days the eggs will hatch. Out of them will hatch, not frogs, but tadpoles, or pollywogs, as they are also called. Everyone likes to watch a tadpole certainly every child does. As soon as the eggs hatch, the surrounding jelly substance may be thrown away, merely as a matter of convenience.
