Cowperwood was so well able to dispose of the million he expected to get, it would be perfectly all right to award it to him; but Van Nostrand had a counter-proposition to make. Would Cowperwood, if the financial crowd now handling the matter so desired, turn over his award to them for a consideration a sum equal to what he expected to make in the event the award was made to him?
"Read all about de cop and de millionaire dat captured de white slavers!" The lad shoved a paper at Bobbie, who tossed him a nickel and hurried on, quizzically glancing at the flaring headlines which featured the name of Reggie Van Nostrand and his own. The quickly made illustrations, showing his picture, the machine of the young clubman, and the house of slavery were startling.
"He's going up town now!" said Reggie Van Nostrand, when the car had diverged from the congested district to an open avenue which ran north and south. The machine turned and sped along merrily toward Harlem. "We're willing," said Burke. "I want to track him to his headquarters." Block after block they followed the taxicab.
The girls, sobbing hysterically with joy at their rescue, almost impeded the bluecoat's defense as they clung to his arms. It was a curious procession which met the eyes of Reggie Van Nostrand and half a dozen reserves who had just run up the steps. "Well, I say old chap, isn't this jolly?" cried Reggie. "This beats any show I ever saw! Why, it's a regular Broadway play!"
"I've been doing my best with them since I got on the force, and I hope to do more if they don't finish me first. A little Italian fruit man down in my precinct sent word to me to-day that they were 'after me. So, maybe I will not have a chance." Van Nostrand interrupted at this point. "Well, Officer 4434, you can have the backing of all the money you need as far as I am concerned.
A. Reeves Jackson, of Chicago; the poet Lariat was Bloodgood H. Cutter, an eccentric from Long Island; "Jack" was Jack Van Nostrand, of New Jersey; and "Moult" and "Blucher" and "Charlie" were likewise real, the last named being Charles J. Langdon, of Elmira, N. Y., a boy of eighteen, whose sister would one day become Mark Twain's wife.
Perhaps I shall cling to it until I, too Ah, I can see that ghastly Thing, the dead, hideous eyes staring up at me! Shall I be like that some day? As ugly as that! It was not my fault, dead, staring eyes; not my fault! The Nicaragua, April 27. I've been sitting for my portrait to Van Nostrand. It is an offering to the shades of Prof. Darmstetter.
"Yes, there at your feet," replied Van Nostrand shortly. "It's my father's. He'll be wondering who stole me and the car. Let him wonder." Burke pulled up the big fur coat and drew it around his shoulders as the car rumbled forward. He found a pair of goggles in a pocket of the coat. "I don't need a hat with these to mask me," he exclaimed.
