There was a look of undisguised astonishment on the faces of the regular guests when they gathered for the next meal. It happened to be supper, but they all looked at the table and then at one another. It was a pity Ham and Miranda did not understand the meaning of those glances, or else that they did not make a longer stay with Mrs. Myers.
"And down yonder on that gulch flat that we are using for a wagon road there is a claim called the 'Mary Mattock' which was taken up and worked and dropped a year or so ago by a Nebraska syndicate. When I was in town last week I gave Benedict, of Benedict & Myers, the job of running down the owners, with the idea that we might possibly wish to buy the ground a little later on. "Good work!"
Myers is now numbered among the most successful business men of the city, and his success has been achieved in a department that has added very materially to the progress of the city.
The fellows who had charge of us, however, could not resist the temptation of playing us a trick, and trying to frighten us out of our wits. Some years ago, also, Myers was in my custody, and I treated him, as I should any fellow-creature, with some kindness and consideration. I spoke to him seriously, and endeavoured to win him from his evil courses.
High up the river was Fort Myers, the most westerly of the line of forts extending across the country to keep in check the Everglade Indians. Lejoillie proposed that we should try to make our way by these forts to the head-waters of the Saint John River, by descending which we might return to Castle Kearney. Our skipper advised us, however, not to make the attempt.
It had evidently been written in a moment of what is called "confidence." "I tell you what, Ham," he wrote, "mother doesn't know what can be done with corn. Mrs. Myers does. She raised a heap of it, this year; and the things she turns it into would drive a cook-book crazy. I've been giving them Latin names; and Frank, he turns them into Hindustanee.
"I fully expected he would; but, after all, there are several reasons against such an act," he answered. "He put the spy to death, both for the sake of vengeance and that he might not betray any more of his secrets, or show us the smugglers' hides. Myers, however, knew that if he murdered a king's officer, the Government authorities would not rest till they had brought him to punishment.
Dick had been in the kitchen, and had advanced as far as the door while Dab was speaking. "Wood?" he muttered to himself. "Guess I know wot dat means. T'ree load ob wood, an' no fishin'! It's jes' awful!" "Now, Mrs. Myers," said Ford, "if you knew what a fisherman Dick is! He might bring you home a load of them." "I am sorry," said Mrs.
Myers' conception of the extensiveness of the Subliminal Self quite overturns the classic notion of what the human mind consists in. The supraliminal region, as Myers calls it, the classic-academic consciousness, which was once alone considered either by associationists or animists, figures in his theory as only a small segment of the psychic spectrum.
Myers has contended that the Self must have a fundamental unity to enable it to withstand the shock of death. Since that time, I have received a number of "psychic" photographs, from various sources, some of them obviously fraudulent, and some of them extremely puzzling, when the circumstances of their production were fairly taken into account.
