Often when a picture is hopelessly out of gear and "mucked up," as they say in the studio, it can be got on the right road again by reducing it to a basis of flat tones, going over it and painting out the gradations, getting it back to a simpler equation from which the right road to completion can be more readily seen.

Mucked with mud, breathing in great gulps, trembling, a suspicious figure to any eye, he burst through the weed curtain and staggered into the open, his caution all gone and a vast desperation fairly choking him but the gray road was empty and the field beyond the road was empty; and, except for him, the whole world seemed empty and silent. As he crossed the field Squire Gathers composed himself.

"Ah, she's a handsome craft, she is," the cook would say, and give her sugar from his pocket, and then the bird would peck at the bars and swear straight on, passing belief for wickedness. "There," John would add, "you can't touch pitch and not be mucked, lad. Here's this poor old innocent bird of mine swearing blue fire and none the wiser, you may lay to that.

"I wrote the menu out in French first, but it seemed not to suit. "All the afternoon the same desolation, like pictures one sees of the moon's surface. About six, water and feed at Beaufort West, and horses led out, trucks mucked out, and tea served out. "The night was very cold; in fact, the climate is quite different on these high table-lands.

"You done well not to 'ave the big gal. I will say that for ye. She's a gad-about grinny, she is, if ever was. A gad-about grinny. Mucked up my mushroom bed to rights, she did, and I 'aven't forgot it. Got the feet of a centipede, she 'as ll over everything and neither with your leave nor by your leave. Like a stray 'en in a pea patch. Cluck! cluck! Trying to laugh it off.

Your ever loving and always faithful FRANK. P.S. There's a poor fellow here in the same ward dying I should say of necrosis of the jaw Vavasour Williams is his name or a part of his name. His father was at Cambridge with my old man, and isn't it rum? he was a pupil of Praddy's!! He mucked his school and 'varsity career, thought next he'd like to be an architect or a scene painter.

For the rest, she drudged in the house, which work she would not have minded had not her clean red floor been mucked up immediately by the trampling farm-boots of her brothers.

"And I don't see," he confessed, "where that fits in with this hand- and heart-shaking o' yours." Halliday looked at him curiously. "If that was the worst," he said, "I could stand it. It isn't. It isn't the beginning of the least of the worst. If it had fell in the trench, now, and mucked up half a dozen men, there'd have been something to squeal about.

He sat down and ate, with his mind and his eyes clinging to the grayish, veined fragments of rock lying on the table beside his plate. "We'll send some of that down to Sacramento right away," he observed, "and have it assayed. And we won't let out anything about it, Bud good or bad. I like this flat. I don't want it mucked over with a lot of gold-crazy lunatics."
