Properly constructed, portable, and well-ventilated kennels for single dogs are not expensive and are greatly to be preferred to any amateurish makeshift. A good one for a terrier need not cost more than a pound. It is usually the single dog that suffers most from imperfect accommodation.
It dawned hot in Georgia. Don rubbed his head and blinked. He got out of bed and paused before a makeshift easel where a drawing, taped to a board, showed a woman sitting on a park bench. She was large, dressed in layers of multi-colored cotton. She reminded him of the Renoir woman in her plush living room, the dog sprawled at her feet, but she was smarter.
Until Wogan had placed the King's ring upon her finger, she did not apparently remark it; but no sooner had that office been performed than she stooped, and with a friendly smile at her makeshift bridegroom, she plucked it from her skirt and let it fall beneath her foot. And that was all.
He has no wheel, this potter for Morocco will not labour, nor be broken, nor disciplined; and so he is reduced to a mere kneading and baking, without the means he fain would employ; and he turns out a mere makeshift his production at best is "not a dish; no, a bulging, kneaded, crooked, shambling, squint-cornered, amorphous botch a mere enamelled vessel of dishonour."
I am doubtful if many of these houses had any long use as the residences of single families if from the very first almost their tenants did not makeshift and take lodgers and sublet. They were built with basements, in which their servants worked and lived servants of a more submissive and troglodytic generation who did not mind stairs. That was the vision at which those industrious builders aimed.
The woman saw that, for her, all other work in the world would be but a makeshift a substitute; and, because of this, while Life had, never before seemed so large, she had, never before felt so small so useless. But still, for the woman, there was peace in her loneliness there was a peace that she had not had before there was a calmness, a quietness, that was not hers before her trial.
Either way is good according to circumstances; the first with the tall hanging and the narrow frieze is fittest if your wall is to be covered with stuffs, tapestry, or panelling, in which case making the frieze a piece of delicate painting is desirable in default of such plaster-work as I have spoken of above; or even if the proportions of the room very much cry out for it, you may, in default of hand-painting, use a strip of printed paper, though this, I must say, is a makeshift of makeshifts.
But there was an unco dust about it; it was tried in the Inner House afore the Feifteen. 'I know all that, but this person will not stay there very long; it's only a makeshift for a night, a mere lock-up house till farther examination. There is a small room through which it opens; you may light a fire for yourselves there, and I 'll send you plenty of stuff to make you comfortable.
Father has some untearable transparent envelopes, and I shall ask him for two of them. They will do as a makeshift. Dora's matriculation is to-morrow, she's quite nervous about it although she is very well up in all the subjects. But she says it's so easy to make mistakes.
But, indeed, they and other matters have led us afar from our makeshift house, and the room we have to decorate therein. And there is still left the fireplace to consider. Now I think there is nothing about a house in which a contrast is greater between old and new than this piece of architecture.
