"Hold hard, Jervas!" exclaimed my uncle George, clutching my left arm. "'Twas I found him!" "But consider, my dear George," sighed my uncle Jervas, laying elegant hand upon my right shoulder, "I bear the brunt of her blame, as usual " "But damme, Jervas " "But pray reflect further, dear George; I am, alas, slightly your senior and, as such, claim the right "
"Lord love the lad begad oh, the dooce!" As for uncle Jervas, forgetting his languor, he stood suddenly erect, frowning, his chin more aggressive than ever. "You haven't been drinking, have you, Peregrine?" he demanded. "No, sir!" "Then you must be mad!" "I think not, sir. Howbeit, I shall go!" "Preposterousandamridiculous!" he exclaimed in a breath.
The lines to Sir Joshua Reynolds are marked by the happy turn of the compliment, and by the strength and harmony of the versification, at least as far as the formal couplet measure will admit of those qualities. They need not fear a comparison with the verses addressed by Dryden to Kneller, or by Pope to Jervas. His Latin compositions are nearly as excellent as his English.
"Dirt is of many kinds and Peregrine's is at least honest and healthy " "Cease, Sir Jervas, I pray!" cried my aunt with a flash of her fine black eyes. "Nevermore will I heed your perfidious counsels, nor the fatuous maunderings of graceless George.
"Th' little 'un's th' gent, guv'nor 'e's th' cove! whispered the mean-looking fellow hoarsely, and now I recognised him as one of the two waterside characters I had met that morning with my uncle Jervas.
"My dear Uncle," I exclaimed, grasping his hand, "pray trust me always to remember that I am a Vereker also." "B'gad, and there ye have it, Jervas; couldn't ha' put it better yourself!" "And pray, sirs, how is my dear and best of aunts?" At this question my uncle Jervas pursed his lips in a soundless whistle and smoothed snowy shirt-frill with caressing fingers.
"But my dear uncles," I interrupted at this juncture, "pray remark that I have no intention of returning home for some time." "Oh, indeed, nephew?" sighed my uncle Jervas, his slim hand tightening a little. "May one venture to ask why?" "I know!" sighed uncle George. "Women, Jervas feminine spells, poor lad!"
"I shall not detain you with a journal of my progress through my spelling-book and copy-books: it is enough to say that I applied with diligence, and soon could write my name in rather more intelligible characters than those in which the name of Jervas is cut on the rock that we were looking at yesterday.
From this curiosity arose the desire of travelling, to which he alludes in his verses to Jervas, and which, though he never found an opportunity to gratify it, did not leave him till his life declined. Of his intellectual character, the constituent and fundamental principle was good sense, a prompt and intuitive perception of consonance and propriety.
Abroad with my wife by water to Westminster, and there left her at my Lord's lodgings, and I to Jervas the barber's, and there was trimmed, and did deliver back a periwigg, which he brought by my desire the other day to show me, having some thoughts, though no great desire or resolution yet to wear one, and so I put it off for a while.
