"But, along with this, Larry and Sally were great people for going to the dances that Hance used to have at the crass-roads, bekase he wished to put money into his own pocket; and if a neighbor died, they were sure to be the first at the wake-house for Sally was a great hand at washing down a corpse -and they would be the last home from the berril; for you know, they couldn't but be axed in to the dhrinking, after the friends would lave the churchyard, to take a sup to raise their spirits and drown sorrow, for grief is always drouthy.

Secretly, she had a desire to account for Lodusky according to established theory. "I wonder ye haint heern of him," said Mis Harney. "He was just awful old Hance! He was Nath's daddy, an' Lord! the wickedest feller! Folks was afeared of him. No one darsn't to go a-nigh him when he'd git mad a-rippin' 'n' a-rearin' 'n' a-chargin'.. 'N' he never got no religion, mind ye; he died jest that a-way.

"I'll do everything in my power," I promised. Then he and Hance went into the cabin, and I walked back to the culprit. "Miss Cullen," I said, gravely, "you have those letters, and must give them to me." "But I told you " she began. To spare her a second untruth, I interrupted her by saying, "I trapped your brother into acknowledging that you have them."

Cap Hance was often heard to declare: "There are three liars here at the Canyon; I'm one and Bass is the other two." Romantic old ladies at El Tovar often pressed him for a story of his early fights with the Indians.

The only two old-timers who had taken advantage of this provision of the law were John Hance and P. D. Berry. The former located at or near the head of the trail that bears his name, and Berry at the head of the Grand View Trail. Both men built log houses, Hance's being a somewhat rude structure, while Berry's was a substantial building.

These are way beyond Grand View and the old Hance Trails, and are Pinal and Lipan Points, leading the eye to a "wavy" wall, slightly to their left. This wall, topped with a series of curves, is the western wall of the Little Colorado River; and the smoother wall beyond, to the left, is the further or eastern wall.

Lord Ralles by this time was making almost as much noise as an engine pulling a heavy freight up grade under forced draft, swearing over his trousers, and was offering the cowboy and Hance money to recover them. When they told him this was impossible he tried to get them to sell or hire a pair, but they didn't like the idea of riding into camp minus those essentials any better than he did.

The mother wrote she would come and visit the grave as soon as she had enough money, but death took her too and she was spared seeing his neglected grave. The Chief stood looking down at the third grave, which still held the weather-beaten débris of funeral wreaths. "Cap Hance is buried here," he said. "He was a dear friend of mine."

This trail, built by brave Hance, begins on the highest part of the rim, eight thousand feet above the sea, a thousand feet higher than the head of Bright Angel trail, and the descent is a little over six thousand feet, through a wonderful variety of climate and life.
