There are three trails leading into the canon and down to the river, the Bright Angel, Grand View and Hance trails, which are at intervals of eight and twelve miles apart. They are equally interesting and comparatively safe if the trip is made on the back of a trained pony or burro with a competent guide. The Hance trail is a loop and is twenty miles long.
Captain Hance, of Company A, being killed at Fredericksburg, First Lieutenant Robert Richardson became Captain. Lieutenant R.H. Wright became Captain of Company E after the promotion of Nance to Major in the latter part of the service. Captain Williams, of Company F, was killed, and Lieutenant Wm. Deal made Captain and commanded at the surrender.
By the new Hance Trail, excepting a few daringly steep spots, you can ride all the way to the river, where there is a good spacious camp-ground in a mesquite grove.
My amusement did not last long, for my next thought was, "If those letters are concealed on any one, they are on Miss Cullen." The thought made me lean up against my mule, and turn hot and cold by turns. A nice situation for a lover! Miss Cullen was sitting on a rock apart from her brother and Hance, as I had asked her to do when I helped her dismount.

On the plateaus separating Hance Canyon from Mineral Canyon, and the latter from Red Canyon, one can see the rare Algonkian strata to fine advantage. Numerous faultings and flexurings may be observed, and on the last mile before reaching the foot of Red Canyon, the trail leads through a great boulder bed along the brink of the gorge immediately overhanging the river. Camp is made here at night.
The ascent is now made on the eastern side of Hance Canyon, to the summit of the Tonto sandstones, and from this point a fine view of Angel Gate is to be had, its rich reds contrasting agreeably with the grays and olives of the Tonto series. Mineral and Red Canyons.
