"I'm hanged if I don't have a cigar too!" says Berry, rushing after us; and accordingly putting in his pocket a key about the size of a shovel, which hung by the little handle of the outer grille, forth he sallied, and joined us in our fumigation.

We turn R., cross to the L. and follow the broad Rue de Lutèce to the Palais de Justice. Entering the Cour du Mai by the great iron grille which has replaced the old stone portal, flanked by two towers, a passage on the left leads us to the Cour de la Ste. We enter by the west porch of the lower chapel.

La Grille was favourably received. Coming at the end of the season, with little hope of a long run, it found favour with all. By the middle of the first act the public were conscious of the style, the poetry, and, here and there, the obscurities of the play. Thenceforward they respected it, pretended to enjoy it, and wished they could understand it. They forgave the play its slight dramatic value.

A realization that her neat black seal dressing-case wasn't quite in the picture, helped to account for the landlady's puzzlement about her. But it hadn't been introduced in evidence here. And yet the young man behind the grille seemed as surprised as the landlady. He repeated his answer to her question with the lubricant of a few more words and a fatuous sort of smile.

"There!" he said, shoving the check through the wicket; and then he stood waiting, expectant. The cashier glanced at the check and passed it back to Eells, who had hastened behind the grille, and then they looked at each other in alarm. "Why er this check," began Eells, "calls for forty-two thousand, eight hundred and fifty-two dollars. Do you want all that money now?"

The ground floor was occupied by the ordinary offices of the company; all the strong-rooms and safes lay in the steel-cased basement. This was reached both by a lift and by a flight of steps. In either case the visitor found before him a grille of massive proportions.

He stopped and triggered the gravity plates in his space boots. Made to give freedom of action when the ship was in free fall, they might just provide a weak suction here. And they did! He was able to climb that arch and, standing on it, work loose the grille which had been fashioned to open. Now.... The pilot flashed his hand torch up into that dark well. He had been right and lucky!

The whole Château was awake now; maids, grooms, valets, gardeners, and keepers were gathering outside the iron grille of the park, whispering together and looking out across the fields. There was nothing to see except pastures and woods, and low-rounded hills crowned with vineyards.

Reverently he handed him his stick, coat and hat a moment later the heavy steel grille closed noiselessly. Blakeman stood grimly looking out of the front window, his jaw set, his eyes following the doctor until he disappeared within his coupe and slammed the door shut. "Damn him!" he said. "If he tells that child that I'll strangle him!"

"You really must keep perfectly still. Won't you promise me you will keep perfectly still?" "I'll promise you anything," he said a little wildly. Neither seemed to notice that he had overdone it. She drew her chair as close as it would go to the grille and leaned against it. "You will keep up your courage, won't you?" she asked anxiously. "Certainly. By the way, how far is it to the b-basement?"
