When there were no speckled cod on the hooks there were silvery hake, velvety black pollock, beautiful scarlet sea-perch that look like little old men, and an occasional ugly dogfish with his Chinese jade eyes. When the dogfish came the men pulled up their anchors and rowed a mile or so away, for where the dogfish pursues all others fly.

Works, buildings and wharf are situated on Sterling Bay, between Image and McGregor Points, ten miles from the entrance to the Inlet. They manufacture from 35,000 to 40,000 gallons of refined oil annually, representing over 500,000 dogfish, giving employment to hundreds of the natives during the summer months.

Ever hear of the Henry Clay Parker, Mister Billie Simms, and the little licking she gave this winner of yours? No? Well, you want to go around and have a drink or two with the boys next time you're ashore and get the news. It was like a dogfish and a mackerel the Henry just eat her up. And there's the others. Why, this one underneath us'd make a holy show of her, I'll bet.

It was all we could do to keep him from cooking one of them "mack'rel" with his own hands. If Jonadab hadn't steered him out of the way while I sneaked down to the Port and bought a bass, we'd have had to eat dogfish we would, as sure as I'm a foot high. Stumpton and his daughter, Maudina, was at the Old Home House. 'Twas late in September, and the boarders had cleared out.

These infinitesimal microbes, bred and controlled by science, will do regularly and methodically the work which buzzards and vultures have done on land, which sharks and dogfish have done at sea, throughout endless centuries. To the marvellous workings of nature we cannot possibly give too much thought or too great admiration.

But the fact remains that not a single dogfish let itself get caught in the Nautilus's nets, so I can't vouch for their voracity. Schools of elegant, playful dolphin swam alongside for entire days.

Fishing here in the summer months is mostly by hand-lining because of the presence of schools of dogfish in these waters at that season. In the spring it is a good ground for cod, and in the fall months cod, hake, and cusk are taken, all by trawling.

Haddock are present in considerable numbers from November to February, and sometimes a good school occurs in 20-fathom depths in April. The arrival of the dogfish usually puts a temporary ending to the fishing here in the last days of June or early In July, to be resumed again when these pests have moved inshore.

"There!" cried the girl; "your own watch says only a quarter past five." "Ow, ay! my leddy; I set it by the toon clock 'at hings i' the window o' the Lossie Airms last nicht. But I maun awa' an' luik efter my lines, or atween the deil an' the dogfish my lord'll fare ill." "You haven't told me why you fired the gun," she persisted.

"Fine!" shouted the lad. "Bring in a catfish with a bunch of kittens," Frank laughed. "I'm afraid we have mice in the provision room." "I'll find a dogfish with a couple of puppies," replied Jimmie, "so we can have plenty of bark to build fires with." "A bad joke," Frank replied. "If you'd quit studying up slang and read the best authors you wouldn't inflict such pain-giving jolts."
