As he waited another little girl lifted out of her basket some nut cookies and big, thick slices of angel cake, while a third arranged some stuffed eggs and big dill pickles. Now all these things Zip adored with the exception of the pickles, so he lay down with nose stretched out in their direction as far as he could without being seen, that he might at least smell the goodies while he waited.
"I bet if I died, they wouldn't even have a funeral," she said cheerfully. "They'd proba'ly just leave me lay." The curiosities of the human mind are found not in high adventure: they are everywhere in the commonplace. Never for a moment did it strike Noble Dill that Florence's turn to the morbid bore any resemblance to his recent visions of his own funeral.
For they were short-handed that summer and, as he explained to Dill, he couldn't afford to ride around and look as important as he felt. "Yuh wait, Dilly, till we get things running the way I want 'em," he encouraged on one of his brief calls at the ranch.
In his acquaintance with Dill he had learned that it was not always wise to question too closely; where Dill wished to give his confidence he gave it freely, but beyond the limit he had fixed for himself was a stone wall, masked by the flowers, so to speak, of his unfailing courtesy. Billy had once or twice inadvertently located that wall.
"When he saw the seats converted into beds he wanted to know if they didn't have a ballroom aboard, or a church, or a farm," and at the recollection of the old tar's questions all in the party had to laugh. "Where is this Billy Dill now?" asked Shadow. "Safe in an old sailors' home," answered Dave. "He took a trip or two to sea, but he couldn't stand it, so we had him put in the home."
Billy, being quite alive to the exigencies of the matter, rode and rode, and with him rode Dill and the other two men when they had the leisure which was not often, since the storms made much "shoveling" of hay necessary if they would keep the calves from dying by the dozen.
She was called Lady Nan, and she lived a long time, and everybody loved her. But never, so long as she lived, did she pin the sprig of dill and the verse over the door again.
E. These are supposed to be stomachic and carminative; but this, and indeed all the other effects ascribed to them, as depending upon their stimulant and aromatic qualities, must be less considerable than those of Dill, Aniseed, or Caraway, though termed one of the four greater hot seeds. "I'm afraid," she said, while Newland's spirit filled with a bitterness extraordinary even in an interrupted poet; "I'm afraid it's Mr. Dill coming up the walk. We'll have to postpone " She rose and went to the steps to greet the approaching guest. "How nice of you to come!" Noble, remaining on the lowest step, clung to her hand in a fever. "Nice to come!" he said hoarsely.
The women had evidently derived special pleasure from the slyness and presumable secrecy of their interview, skulking out with a craft of concealment that completely eluded the notice of Sandy and "Dill," and this had given Odalie a sense of disapprobation and repulsion. "Why should you care?" demanded Demeré, always sympathetic with a woman's whim-whams, even when he could not feel with them.
