We observe that it has been likewise found necessary to publish, in France, un Dictionnaire neologique, a dictionary of the new terms adopted since the revolution. It must be supposed, that during the late disturbances in Ireland, many cant terms have been brought into use, which are not yet to be reckoned amongst the acknowledged terms of the country.
Of another of Chopin's private performances in the spring of 1848 we read in the Supplement du Dictionnaire de la Conversation, where Fiorentino writes: We were at most ten or twelve in a homely, comfortable little salon, equally propitious to conversation and contemplation. If these poets never turn the leaves of the Bible, it is not because they have not a bulky book of their own, the Dictionnaire de rimes.
Besides the above work, the following of his works incurred the same fate: the Lettres Philosophiques , the Cantique des Cantiques , the Dictionnaire Philosophique , also burnt at Geneva; L'Homme aux Quarante Écus , Le Dîner du Comte de Boulainvilliers . When we add to these burnings the fact that at least fourteen works of Voltaire were condemned, many others suppressed or forbidden, their author himself twice imprisoned in the Bastille, and often persecuted or obliged to fly from France, we must admit that seldom or never had any writer so eventful a literary career.
It is in late and rapid sittings that most measures of this kind passed through their final stages, and since the twelve o'clock rule has been adopted a much smaller number of bills introduced by private members find their way to the statute book.
