There was another series of deflecting flashes from the defense batteries. Two more domes vanished... Then somehow nothing more. Evidently some of the attackers had been only half hearted, this time. Reprieve... Almost four hundred people were dead. It could have been the whole Town. Then spreading disaster. All Nelsen's friends were okay. The Posts called in okay, too. Nelsen waited three days.
"That always happens to persons who go into a thin air for the first time; just as if you had climbed a high mountain. Breathe as slowly as you can, and swallow frequently. That will relieve the pressure on your ear drums. I'll send the ship lower." Tom did as he was advised, and the aeronaut, deflecting the rudder, sent the Red Cloud on a downward slant.
The cries and shrieks of the frightened people began to be heard above the roar of the floods, and a few steps further the great wave struck some unusually solid structure. Its force right in the centre was already diminished. On these houses it split and the greater part of it went on diagonally across the triangle, deflecting somewhat toward the north and so on down to the stone arch bridge.
The girl was beside herself with trouble and anxiety. Lashing her horse one minute, and the nearest cow the next, she raged up and down in front of the herd, bending all her energies toward deflecting her charges from their course, but the struggle was useless. Seeing that they could do nothing, Luther caught her horse by the bit as she passed him and shouted explanations in her ear.
His humane instincts, his gratitude, his feeling for another flared up even in that moment of battle and passion, when the man-hunting impulse was so strong. His aim, quick as it was, had been sure and deadly, but, deflecting the muzzle of the rifle a shade, his finger contracted again.
The courses of the different balls in a charge of grape-shot, hurled from a cannon, are evidently due to two sets of forces 1, their initial energy and the direction of their aim; 2, the deflecting power of resisting objects or forces or the different balls might roll with great velocity down a precipitous mountain-side.
In the first case velocity and direction of course would be determined largely by initial impulse; in the second, by the attraction of the earth and by the inequalities of its surface. In evolution, environment, roughly speaking, corresponds to these deflecting or attracting external objects or forces; inherent tendencies to initial impulse.
The old inventor glanced at the direction compass and then at the deflecting one that indicated how near the north pole they were. As he did so he uttered a cry. "What is it?" cried the boy. For answer Mr. Henderson pointed to the needle. It was almost straight up and down. "Well?" asked Jack, who did not understand much about scientific things.
For convenience, the most familiar image should come first; and this is probably that of the comet, or meteoric streams, like the Leonids and Perseids; a complex of minute mechanical agencies, reacting within and without, and guided by the sum of forces attracting or deflecting it.
The two chums were soon seated side by side and then Tom, grasping the steering wheel, turned on full power and jerked the releasing rope. Over the ground shot the sky racer, quickly attaining speed until, with a deft motion, the young inventor tilted the deflecting rudder and up into the air they shot.
