And they shall comfort you, when ye see their ways and their doings: and ye shall know that I have not done without cause all that I have done in it, saith the Lord God;” Dan. xii. 10, “Many shall be purified, and made white, and tried; but the wicked shall do wickedly: and none of the wicked shall understand; but the wise shall understand.” After the promise of delivering those that were carried away to Babylon, there is another promise added of that which was much better: Jer. xxiv. 7, “I will give them an heart to know me, that I am the Lord; and they shall be my people, and I will be their God; for they shall return unto me with their whole heart;” Psal. cxxx. 8, “He shall redeem Israel from all his iniquities;” Zeph. iii. 12, 13, “I will also leave in the midst of thee an afflicted and poor people, and they shall trust in the name of the Lord.

And though these Statutes were not then made so perfectly useful as they were designed, till Archbishop Laud's time who assisted in the forming and promoting them; yet our present Proctor made them as effectual as discretion and diligence could do: of which one example may seem worthy the noting; namely, that if in his night-walk he met with irregular Scholars absent from their Colleges at University hours, or disordered by drink, or in scandalous company, he did not use his power of punishing to an extremity; but did usually take their names, and a promise to appear before him unsent for next morning; and when they did, convinced them, with such obligingness, and reason added to it, that they parted from him with such resolutions, as the man after God's own heart was possessed with, when he said, "There is mercy with thee, and therefore thou shall be feared:" Psal. cxxx. 4.

I should very much like to read Aisse to you so as to talk a little about it; some of the actors whom they propose are, to my way of thinking, impossible. It is hard to have to do with uneducated people. CXXX. TO GUSTAVE FLAUBERT Wednesday evening, 13 October, 1869

They have no distinctive symbolism, however, and are destitute of the characteristic spots which members of the Rabbit clan now invariably place on their totemic signatures. The animal design on the bowl illustrated in plate CXXX, c, probably represents a rabbit or hare, quite well drawn in profile, with a feathered appendage from the head. Behind it is the ordinary symbol of the dragon-fly.

It may be mentioned, however, that the Horn people are reputed to have been early arrivals in Tusayan, and it is not improbable that representatives of the Horn clans lived in Sikyatki previous to its overthrow. Two faintly drawn animals, evidently intended for quadrupeds, appear on the interior of the food bowl shown in plate CXXX, b.

Thorgerd Holgabrud. Snorri has a bare allusion to it. Holger Danske, or Ogier Le Danois. See Corpus Poeticum Boreale, vol. i. p. cxxx., and No. 10 of this series. Rydberg in the Teutonic Mythology, and by Mr. Nutt in the Voyage of Bran. Ballads. Professor Child is perhaps hasty in regarding the two parts of Clerk Saunders as independent.

Most of these are so well drawn that there appears to be no question as to their identification. One of the most instructive of these figures is shown in plate CXXX, a, which is much worn, and indistinct in detail, although from what can be traced it was probably intended to represent a mythic creature known as the Giant Elk.

Every day after eating he would come out and say "At first I worked hard and suffered hunger but now I am eating in happiness; and you were happy then but now you are starving." CXXX. The Two Brothers. There were once two brothers who were constantly quarrelling and one afternoon after a heated quarrel the younger brother asked the villagers to come and judge between them.

The knowledge of our Father in heaven, of his love to us, and of his eternal beauty and glory, which fills all heavens and all worlds with light and life. PSALM cxxx. 1. Out of the deep have I cried unto thee, O Lord. Lord, hear my voice. What is this deep of which David speaks so often? He knew it well, for he had been in it often and long. He was just the sort of man to be in it often.

The procession then went round the almember in the Synagogue seven times, during each circuit one of the seven Psalms xclxi., xxx., xxiv., lxxxiv., cxxii., cxxx., c. being chanted, after which Mr Montefiore ascended the pulpit and offered up a Hebrew prayer, of which the following is a translation:
