Famous among women composers of all nations is Cécile-Louise-Stephanie Chaminade. She was born at Paris in 1861, of a family that was well endowed with musical taste. In childhood, she made the piano her favourite companion, and while other girls were devoted to their dolls, she would try to express in tones the simple emotions that moved her.

The life of Chaminade affords still another case of this opposition. When Rubinstein heard a few of her early compositions, upon which he was asked to pass an opinion, he could not gainsay their excellence, but insisted on adding that he thought women ought not to compose.

Pat remarked once, that the general superintendent was going to leave Chaminade in a special at 10:30 A. M., on a tour of inspection over the road. That was about all the talking he did that morning. His work was as good as ever, and in fact, he made some of the prettiest meets that morning I had ever seen. About 10:35, I asked Borroughs to allow me to go over to the hotel to get a cigar.

I met them at breakfast and at lunch and at the half-past six o'clock high tea that formed the third chief meal of the day. I heard them rattling off the compositions of Chaminade and Moskowski, with great decision and effect, and hovered on the edge of tennis foursomes where it was manifest to the dullest intelligence that my presence was unnecessary.

She came into the drawing-room and with good-humored derision, smiled at him. "I knew you'd come and do it," she told him. "It isn't going to be so bad," he answered. "Moszkowski, Chaminade, quite a little of Chopin for that matter, will go pretty well on it." "Did you bring my songs?" she asked.

The K. M. & O. was a main trunk line running out of Chaminade, and was the best road for business that I had as yet struck.

Elfrida Andrée, of Sweden, is another composer of high rank. But when all is said and done, it seems at present as if the palm must be awarded to France, with Augusta Holmes and Cécile Chaminade as rival claimants. Bearing in mind the fact that woman's greatest activity has been limited to the most recent period, it may be well to inquire what the present tendencies are in the world of music.

I told him I might not know much, but if he would say the word I would get those twenty-three cars into Chaminade, or know the reason why. He looked at me for a minute, asked me a few questions about what I knew of an engine and then said, "By George! I'll risk it. Get on that engine, my boy; take this one wiper left for a fireman, and pull out. But first go over to the office for your orders.

"It's curious; sometimes it seemed to me that it was you who were playing." Mary laughed. "I? I strum! Piano. A little Chopin Grieg Chaminade. You wouldn't listen!" Bibbs drew a deep breath. "I'm frightened again," he said, in an unsteady voice. "I'm afraid you'll think I'm pushing, but " He paused, and the words sank to a murmur. "Oh, if you want ME to play for you!" she said. "Yes, gladly.

The State convention was held in the Senate Chamber of the new Capitol at Jackson in April, 1913. At the evening sessions all seats on the floor were taken, the galleries filled and chairs brought from committee rooms to accommodate the audiences. Music was furnished by the Chaminade Club of Jackson. Mayor Swepson I. Taylor gave the address of welcome. Others who spoke were Mrs.
