Then Hal and Chester leaped to their feet, as did Nikol, Ivan and Colonel Anderson. "Little man's gone off his head," muttered Ivan, as he leaped from the car to go to Stubbs' assistance. Stubbs, in his headlong leap, struck exactly where he had intended right upon the Bulgarian's shoulders, and the force of the impact bore the man to the ground.
Even the Balkans were with us, in the shape of a tall, soldier-like Bulgarian with a heavy mustache and the eyes of a kindly and highly intelligent hawk. He was going back home "to fight?" "Yes, to fight." "With Servia?" asked some one politely, with the usual vague American notion of the Balkan states. The Bulgarian's eyes shone curiously. "You have a sense of humor!" he said.
Evidently the defection of the carrier had been serious. A handful of grain on a wrong window-sill, and kingdoms overthrown! Georgiev caught the pigeon and drew the message from the tube. Even Harmony grasped the seriousness of the situation. The little Bulgarian's face, from gray became livid; tiny beads of cold sweat came out on his forehead. "What have I done?" cried Harmony.
How the news of the young Bulgarian's arrival in England got there I do not know, but there was a considerable journalistic fuss about him, and the result was that a wealthy Bulgarian family, resident in Manchester, made overtures to my sister, and with my free consent, formally adopted the child.
A tall Bulgarian, six feet high, perceiving that I had fainted away at this sight, began to ravish me; this made me recover; I regained my senses, I cried, I struggled, I bit, I scratched, I wanted to tear out the tall Bulgarian's eyes not knowing that what happened at my father's house was the usual practice of war.
We did not know Bulgaria had declared war." The Bulgarian's face seemed to relax a trifle. Apparently Hal had made a favorable impression. "Well," he said, "the best I can do is turn you over to my superior. Still, if things are as you say, I have no doubt that you will be allowed to proceed into Greece." "Thank you, Colonel," said Hal.
This improvement was carried through in time of war when there was much occupation for the national energy in more important directions. In other places I noted the Bulgarian's passion for a good road; and the roads in his own country were excellent. The road-making instinct is a great proof of a stable sense of civilisation.
Then he raised his voice a trifle and called aloud, at the same time drawing his revolver and presenting it squarely at the Bulgarian's head: "Chester! Oh, Chester! You can all come down now." In response to this hail, Chester, Helen, Mr. Stubbs and Nikol soon stood before them. When Hal drew his revolver, the Bulgarian officer staggered back. "A traitor, eh?" he exclaimed.
It was at that moment that Ivan, quicker than the others, seized the rifle in his two hands. He gave a quick twist and jerked the weapon from the hands of his opponent. The latter staggered back and his hand dropped to his belt. But before he could draw a revolver, Ivan had raised his newly won rifle and brought it down on the Bulgarian's head. The man dropped inert without a sound.
