I testify before God and His angels that it shall be so, as He hath intimated to my ignorance. These are not my words that I have set forth in Latin, but those of God and the prophets and apostles, who never lied: "He that believeth shall be saved, but he that believeth not shall be condemned." God hath said it.

To love's empire has been added the whole realm of charity. "Love," says the sacred word, "covereth a multitude of sins." "Love beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things." Love has become prudent.

Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up, doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil; rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth; beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things.

"If," said Fra Francesco, speaking sorrowfully, "the blessed law of silence were added to our vow, how would it save a man perplexity and trouble! For that which one believeth must color his speech, though he would fain speak little. Thy light is larger than mine own I know it to be so and yet to me it bringeth no vision. I would it had been given us to see and teach alike!"

The Lord gave His blessing, and I left him next day rejoicing in the Christ who said: "I am the resurrection and the life; he that believeth in Me, though he were dead, yet shall he live." As the world moves forward, and man pushes his way into the waste places of the earth, that lonely grave will be forgotten.

Now he that looketh upon coming to God by Christ with such an eye as this, cannot lay the stress of his salvation upon the faith, or belief thereof: indifferent faith, will serve for indifferent things; yea, a man must look beyond that which he believeth is but one with the ceremonial laws, but not the same with baptism, or the Lord's supper; for with those you compare that of coming to God by Christ.

'I am the Life! that is what all the echoes were saying as Sydney Carton, cherishing a great heroic purpose in his heart, paced the deserted streets that night. 'I am the Life! I am the Life! 'He that believeth in Me, though he were dead, yet shall he live! 'Whosoever believeth in Me shall never die! That being so, what does death matter?

The fact is, that all his leniency with his students, and all his apparent ascription to them of a high degree of diligence, scholarship, and mental grasp, had their roots not in credulity but in charity the charity which "believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things." His very defects came from an excess of charity, and one loved him all the better because of them.

As the heathen counted for divine the legislative wisdom of the man, manly strength, manly truth, manly justice, manly courage, Hercules with his club, Jupiter with his thunderbolt, so Baal, representing the primeval power of nature, became the object of idolatrous worship. Salvation depends upon faith in Christ. Whosoever believeth in the Son hath everlasting life.

"'He that believeth on him shall not be ashamed; 'shall not be ashamed!" she repeated slowly. Dr. Quackenboss looked at Fleda, who kept her eyes fixed upon her aunt. "But it seems to me I beg pardon perhaps I am arrogant " he said with a little bow, "but it appears to me almost in a manner almost presumptuous, not to be a little doubtful in such a matter until the time comes.
