Eustace Ansell joined herself to the two gentlemen who still lingered over a desultory breakfast in Mrs. Westmore's dining-room, she responded to their greeting with less than her usual vivacity. It was one of Mrs. Ansell's arts to bring to the breakfast-table just the right shade of sprightliness, a warmth subdued by discretion as the early sunlight is tempered by the lingering coolness of night.
Ansell's migratory habits made it impossible for her to do more than intermittently hover and advise; and a new hope rose before Mr. Langhope when it occurred to him to appeal to Miss Brent.
Ansell's post, and exposed her, unprepared, to the full beam of welcome which that lady's rapid advance threw like a searchlight across her path. "Dear Miss Brent! I was just wondering how it was that I hadn't seen you before." Mrs.
He faltered. "To Ansell's, it is " It seemed as if he was making some great admission. So self-conscious was he, that he thought the two women exchanged glances. Mr. Amherst is also your friend. As I said just now, you are the only person who might act as a link between them surely you will not renounce the rôle." Justine controlled herself.
"Rural silence." "A field with no noise in it, I suppose you mean. I don't understand." Ansell smiled, but a slight fire in the man's eye checked him. After all, this was a person who could knock one down. Moreover, there was no reason why he should be teased. He had it in him to retort "No. Why?" He was not stupid in essentials. He was irritable in Ansell's eyes a frequent sign of grace.
Ansell's suspicions faded to insignificance Mrs. Ansell and her kind might think what they chose, since all that mattered now was that she herself should act bravely and circumspectly in her last attempt to save her friends. "I am not sure," Mrs.
