It is not hard to comprehend. When they work for the fertilizer-plants they do not need ice they do not need to hurry to the port to save spoiling they can stay out till the boat is packed full. So often a greater part of the magnificent schools of white sea-bass, albacore, and yellowtail splendid food fish go into the fertilizer-plants to make a few foreign-born hogs rich.
The albacore, he noticed suddenly, had ceased to slip through the chute. He frowned at the observance. Surely Rossi had brought a larger cargo than this. Walking again to the intake from the tank above, he listened. The valve was still open. There would be more or Blankovitch would close the chute and assist him below.
On the opposite side of the float the crew of the Flying Fish, the Snark, the Bonita and the Albacore were equally busy over their craft. "Douse the engine with oil," directed Rob, as Merritt gave the piece of machinery a final inspection; "and how about that extra set of batteries?"
Gregory noticed that the girl appeared worried when she returned to the Richard. "Dropping fast," she announced. "It may be just a squall or it may be a real blow. This is no place for us in either case. We must rush the fishing all we can." Gregory agreed and gave the necessary orders. From the sides of the Snipe the lines flashed over the rail. On the instant the albacore began to strike.
When they reached the albacore banks and sighted the vanguard of the fishing fleet, both came back sharply, back from the maze of doubt and intangible suspicions which clouded their brains as the fog had clouded the island that held their thoughts. Making the rounds of the albacore fishermen the truth of the girl's pessimistic prophecy became strikingly apparent.
"A shark!" cried the boy-sailor, catching a glance of some large fish at some distance out in the water on the larboard bow, the direction in which Snowball had pointed. "Shark! nuffin ob de kind," rejoined the negro; "diff'rent sort ob fish altogedder. If him wa shark, de albacore no stay hyar. Dey go up to him, and dart all 'bout im, jess like de lilly birds when dey see big hawk or de vulture.
The albacore seemed equally tired of the connection, equally exhausted; and as it swam slowly about, no longer darting swiftly from point to point, as at the beginning of the strife, the spectators could now see that the foot of the sea-hawk, instead of being held between the jaws of the fish, as at first they had supposed it to be, appeared to be resting on the back of its head, as if the bird had perched there, and was balancing itself on one leg!
Settling down slowly, he descended three or four hundred feet, or so it seemed, and began to plug, very much like an albacore, only much heavier. He fooled around down there for ten minutes, with me jerking at him all the time to irritate him, before he showed any sign of rising.
At last came the gun that started off the Snark, the Bonita and the Albacore, which were all of about the same speed. "Our turn next," said Rob, who had previously received his instructions from the committee. "Well, I'm all ready," said Merritt, nervously twisting a grease cup. "Bang!"
It was a single flying-fish, which by some chance, perhaps from not being either so fast a swimmer or so swift upon the wing as its fellows, had lagged behind the "school." It was no longer playing laggard, and for a very good reason: since an albacore, nearly full three feet in length, was swimming after it and doing his very best to overtake it.
