I give as illustrations, a few extracts from "The Social Destiny of Man," by Albert Brisbane, page 269: "Four societies have existed on the earth the savage, patriarchal, barbarian and civilized. Under these general heads may be classed the various social forms through which man has progressed up to the present day.
The same story is referred to in Madame de Vandeul's Mém. de Diderot, p. 61. Conf., ix. 245, 246. Grimm to Madame d'Epinay, ii. 259, 269, 313, 326. Conf., x. 17. Mém., ii. 318. Conf., ix. 322. The publication from the autograph originals sets this at rest. For Shakespeare, see Corr. Lit., iv. 143, etc. D'Epinay, ii. 188. D'Epinay, ii. 150. Also Vandeul's Mém. de Diderot, p. 61. I., page 269, article, Abstinence. The opinion that food and drink are necessary to life is so generally accepted by mankind, that few venture to dispute the dictum of Virchow relative to Louise Lateau, "Fraud or miracle."
I must lay thee down: Thou troublest me with strange alarms; Smiles hast thou, sweet ones of thine own; I cannot keep thee in my arms; For they confound me: as it is, I have forgot those smiles of his!" Or page 269, vol. "Thou hast a nest, for thy love and thy rest And though little troubled with sloth Drunken lark! thou would'st be loth To be such a traveller as I. Happy, happy liver!
Mémoires Particuliers, ii., p. 132. "Mémoires Particuliers," p. 111. See ante. "Histoire de la Terreur," par Mortimer Ternaux, ii., p. 269. For the transactions of this day, and of the following months, he is by far the most trustworthy guide, as having had access to official documents of which earlier writers were ignorant.
"Can you repeat these numbers after me?" Without waiting for her to make excuse, he said quickly "5183." "5183," she repeated mechanically. "47395," came in rapid succession, to which she replied, perhaps a little slower than before, "Now, 654726," he said. "654726," she repeated, I thought with some hesitation. "Again, 2964375," he shot out. "269," she hesitated, "73 " she stopped.
Lord Cochrane polled 3,708; so that Sir Francis bad a majority of 1,426 votes above Lord Cochrane, the other successful candidate; Mr. Sheridan polled only 2,615, so that the votes of Sir Francis nearly doubled those of Mr. Sheridan, the late member; Mr. Paull polled no more than 269 votes.
As compared with Germany, one is at once impressed with the greater number of journals and their more effective distribution at home. In America there are 2,472 daily papers; 16,269 weeklies; and 2,769 monthlies. Tri-weekly and quarterly publications added bring the total to 22,806.
Melvil was an agreeable courtier, a man of address and conversation; and it was recommended to him by his mistress, that, besides grave reasonings concerning politics and state affairs, he should introduce more entertaining topics of conversation, suitable to the sprightly character of Elizabeth, and should endeavor by that means to insinuate himself into her confidence. * Keith, p. 269, 270.
This tolerance proceeds partly, no doubt, from the fact that the Eastern Church in general, and the Russian Church in particular, have remained for centuries in a kind of intellectual torpor. * Solovyoff, "Otcherki ig istorii Russkoi Literaturi XIX. veka." St. Petersburg, 1903, p. 269.
