On inspecting the steam hammer I found that Bourdon had omitted some important details, which had led to a few mishaps, especially with respect to the frequent breaking of the piston-rod at its junction with the hammer block.

The hammer, as thus sketched, consisted of, first an anvil on which to rest the work; second, a block of iron constituting the hammer or blow-giving part; third, an inverted steam-cylinder to whose piston-rod the block was attached.

I suppose that in a steam engine the smallest rivet is quite as essential as the huge piston, and that if the rivet drops out the piston-rod is very likely to stop rising and falling. So it is a very vulgar way of talking to speak about A.'s work being large and B.'s work being small, or to assume that we have eyes to settle which work is principal and which subordinate.

Fawdor, said he coldly, spreading out a map on the table before him, 'you will start at once for Fort Ungava, at Ungava Bay, in Labrador. I felt my heart stand still for a moment, and then surge up and down, like a piston-rod under a sudden rush of steam. 'You will proceed now, he went on, in his hard voice, 'as far as the village of Pont Croix. There you will find three Indians awaiting you.

He saw the triumph in DeBar's eyes, and with a last supreme effort drew back his arm and sent a terrific short-arm punch into the other's stomach. The grip at his throat relaxed. A second, a third, and a fourth blow, his arm traveling swiftly in and out, like a piston-rod, and the triumph in DeBar's eyes was replaced by a look of agony.

Home was the one word in the mind of each; and they both came from Bonaventure. The one was a tall, athletic young man, who had borne a captain's commission in Papineau's patriot army. He rode a sorel horse a great, wiry raw-bone, with a lunge like a moose, and legs that struck the ground with the precision of a piston-rod.

The two men sprang into a posture of defense, which was lost as quickly as it was taken, one great arm shot out like a piston-rod; there was the sound of bare fists beating on naked flesh; there was an exultant indrawn gasp of savage pleasure and relief from the crowd, and the great fight had begun.

Indeed, had I known how well it would turn out I should have gone a step farther and rigged my saw to run by steam power setting up a frame in the bows to hold a wheel carrying a pin on which the saw could play and to which I could make fast a bar from my piston-rod and in that way saved myself from the longest bit of back-breaking work that ever I had to do.

"It's a falsehood!" shouted Frank "a falsehood as foul and dirty as the muck in that pool! That for you!" Frank's arm shot out like a piston-rod, and into the mud-puddle, head over heels, went Gill Mace with a frightened howl. "Well, it's been a pretty lively day for me, and every move I make I seem to be getting deeper and deeper into trouble."

He pointed out that, though the piston-rod was more or less straight, the piston-rod cross-head the thing that had been jammed sideways in the guides had been badly strained, and had cracked the lower end of the piston-rod.
