Well, I say I was fortunate enough to spend two years as an assistant schoolmaster at the old Boston Latin School, the oldest institution of learning, as we are fond of saying, in the United States. And there first I made my manhood's acquaintance with boys. "Do you think," said dear Dr. Malone to me one day, "that my son Robert will be too young to enter college next August?"

It was something to win that cheer from these lads, boys at heart, though just at manhood's morning, and sworn to the service of their flag. How she wished Daddy Neil could hear it.

Perhaps she wondered that the boy who would deceive his grandmother about a violin should be so immovable in regarding her pleasure in the matter of a needful medicine. But in this fact I begin to see the very Falconer of my manhood's worship.

Through memory we feel childhood's joys and youth's sweet love and manhood's triumphs still our own, secure against the perils of oblivion. Now art does for the race what memory does for the individual. Only through expression can the past be preserved for all men and all time.

Without intending it, I became at once the author and hero of a romance, conjuring up rivals, imagining events, the actions of others and my own, and experiencing every change of passion, till jealousy and despair had their end in bliss. O, had I the burning fancy of my early youth, with manhood's colder gift, the power of expression, your hearts, sweet ladies, should flutter at my tale!

"There was woman's fearless eye, Lit by her deep love's truth; There was manhood's brow, serenely high, And the fiery heart of youth."

Of the son, "Young Matt," the people called him, it is enough to say that he seemed made of the same metal and cast in the same mold as the father; a mighty frame, softened yet by young manhood's grace; a powerful neck and well poised head with wavy red-brown hair; and blue eyes that had in them the calm of summer skies or the glint of battle steel.

With hasty step death presses on, Nor grants to man a moment's stay, He falls ere half his race be run In manhood's pride is swept away! Prepared or unprepared to die, He stands before his Judge on high. A common near Altdorf. In the background to the right the keep of Uri, with the scaffold still standing, as in the third scene of the first act.

I wish I were half as good as many heathens have been, I said. Dying for a principle seems to me a higher degree of virtue than scolding for it; and the history of heathen races is full of instances where men have laid down their lives for the love of their kind, of their country, of truth, nay, even for simple manhood's sake, or to show their obedience or fidelity.

But the woman in his arms did not know that, and it would have made no difference if she had! In that supreme moment it was only man and woman. Opal gazed in amazement at this revelation of a new Paul. How splendid he was! What a king among all the men she knew! What a god in his manhood's glory! a god to make the hearts of better and wiser women than she ache and break with longing!
