In the name of bread and butter, what am I to do? (I was obliged this morning to borrow fifty dollars from Theodore, who remembered gleefully that he has been owing me a trifling sum for the past four years, and in fact has preserved a note to this effect.) Within the last week I have hatched a desperate plan: I have made up my mind to take a wife a rich one, bien entendu. Why not accept the goods of the gods? It is not my fault, after all, if I pass for a good fellow. Why not admit that practically, mechanically as I may say maritally, I may be a good fellow? I warrant myself kind. I should never beat my wife; I don't think I should even contradict her. Assume that her fortune has the proper number of zeros and that she herself is one of them, and I can even imagine her adoring me. I really think this is my only way. Curiously, as I look back upon my brief career, it all seems to tend to this consummation. It has its graceful curves and crooks, indeed, and here and there a passionate tangent; but on the whole, if I were to unfold it here

Unless you eulogize whatever they say or do, unless you adapt yourself to their slightest whim, they become angry with you. They are that way because, as St. Paul says, they "think themselves to be something," they think they know all about the Scriptures. Paul has their number when he calls them zeros. They deceive themselves with their self-suggested wisdom and holiness.

An enormous joy rose up in his heart and with bright eyes he stepped to Marianne and said: "Marianne, here is something for you, for which you can buy whatever you like." But when Marianne saw that on the paper was a number and several zeros after it, she struck her hands together from astonishment and fright, and cried: "Dear God, I have not earned that, this is riches!"

The captain of the other side follows, taking his position, then a player of the first side takes his position endeavoring to be in a row with the first move, so the next player on his side will form the third cross or zero, as the case may be, in the row, either straight or diagonally, and win the game for that side. The winning side then changes to zeros if they were crosses or vice versa.

"The zeros taught us phosphorus We learned to like the fire By playing glaciers when a boy And tinder guessed by power "Of opposite to balance odd If white a red must be! Paralysis, our primer dumb Unto vitality." Then comes the "crowning extravaganza.... If I read a book, and it makes my whole body so cold no fire will ever warm me, I know that is poetry.

Tonight, I come before you to announce that the federal deficit, once so incomprehensively large that it had 11 zeros, will be simply zero. I will submit to Congress, for 1999, the first balanced budget in 30 years. And if we hold fast to fiscal discipline, we may balance the budget this year four years ahead of schedule.

The first little girl drew a number from the left urn, and exhibited it to the audience. "Zero!" said the president. The zero did not create much of a sensation, however. The audience somehow seemed to have been expecting it. "Zero!" said the president, announcing the figure drawn by the second little girl. Two zeros.

Two things struck me as characteristic of the principal plenipotentiaries: as a rule, they eschewed first-rate men as fellow-workers, one integer and several zeros being their favorite formula, and they took no account of the flight of time, planning as though an eternity were before them and then suddenly improvising as though afraid of being late for a train or a steamer.

Pouget confesses: "The syndicalist has a contempt for the vulgar idea of democracy the inert, unconscious mass is not to be taken into account when the minority wishes to act so as to benefit it...." He refers in another place to the majority, who "may be considered as human zeros.
