In 1510 Ponce de Leon founded the town of Caparra, soon after abandoned, and now known as Pureto Viejo, and in 1511, with more success, the city of San Juan Bautista, or better known simply as San Juan. The native inhabitants were soon subdued and swept away. In 1595 the capital was sacked by Drake, and in 1598 by the Earl of Cumberland.
"Take care, man, let me go" Transom and I volunteered in a breath "No, no, I will go myself," continued Don Ricardo; "let go, man God help me, the old creature is crazed, el viejo no vale." "Here, here! help, Don Ricardo!" cried his wife.
It is also evident that "Vilcabamba Viejo" was so constructed that the monks could be kept for three weeks in its vicinity without being able to see what was going on in the city or to describe the kinds of "abominations" which were practiced there, as they did those at the white rock of Chuquipalta.
Her husband stood by her, and she indicated Elena by a motion of her fan. "Is she not beautiful to-night, our little one?" she asked proudly. "See how pink her cheeks are! Her eyes shine like stars. She is the handsomest of all our children, viejo." "Yes," he said, something like tenderness in his cold blue eyes, "there is no prettier girl on twenty ranchos.
Not only so, but a norther was blowing, and comforters, lounging on the wharf assured us that no canoe would come from Pueblo Viejo until the storm ceased, which would not be for twenty-four hours. "Ay!" said she in good enough Spanish, "Mono de Panama; viejo diablo de Panama." Yeo threw up his hands with a shriek "Oh Lord of all mercies! Those were the last words of Mr. John Oxenham!
From the Yasica River, the mouth of which is about 100 feet wide, an uneven rocky stretch of coast extends in a southeasterly direction to Cape Frances Viejo, where there is a new lighthouse. Numerous brooks traverse this region and leap down to the sea from the rocks, in beautiful cascades often twenty and thirty feet in height.
The bills of the performance ran as follows: "El Domingo, 3 de Octobre, de 1880. Donato Palonimo vecino de chozas de la Sierra, con diviza amarilla."
At first, we thought to visit the latter, but the difficulty of reaching it was presented so forcibly, and the ease of reaching the Huaxteca Veracruzana so emphasized, that we determined upon the latter, and selected the town of Ozuluama for our central point. We could go by canoes across the river to Pueblo Viejo, where we could secure horses for the further journey.
Several of his people however did not think fit to accompany his flight, and preferred giving themselves up to Bachicao, who likewise took possession of two ships which happened to be in the port of Tumbez. From thence, Bachicao went to Puerto Viejo and other places, where he drew together about an hundred and fifty men, all of whom he took along with him in the ships of his squadron.
