I shrouded myself in one corner of the room, and counted the dull minutes till the daylight dawned. I pass over the detail of my recital the experiment partially succeeded would to God that it had not! would that she had gone down to her grave with her dreadful secret unrevealed! would but " Here Glanville's voice failed him, and there was a brief silence before he recommenced.
His revelation is the flashing of the uncreated and intolerable light of His infinite Being through the encircling clouds of human conceptions and words, or of deeds which each show forth, in forms fitted to our apprehension, some fragment of His lustre. After all revelation, He remains unrevealed.
How and where did he begin himself? Whence came his consciousness of God, his gift for recognizing God? We do not know. The story of his growth, his inward growth, is almost unrevealed to us. Where does anyone begin, who takes us any great distance? It is very hard to know. Where did our own thoughts of God begin? What made them? How did they come?
Hawbury could not distinguish any face among the crowd of women that bent over Lady Dalrymple, and Ethel's face was thus still unrevealed; but he saw Minnie and Mrs. Willoughby and Girasole. "What the devil's all this about?" asked Hawbury, haughtily, as his horses stopped at the Baron's carriage. "You are prisoners " began Girasole.
The ways of God go down into microscopic depths, as well as up into telescopic heights and with more marvel, for there lie the beginnings of life: the immensities of stars and worlds all exist for the sake of less things than they. So with mind; the ways of God go into the depths yet unrevealed to us; he knows his horses and dogs as we cannot know them, because we are not yet pure sons of God.
He paused, pondering in silence over much that Undine had before said to him. Bertalda had meanwhile given herself up to a variety of strange thoughts. She knew a good deal of Undine's origin, and yet not the whole, and the fearful Kühleborn especially had remained to her a terrible but wholly unrevealed mystery. She had indeed never even heard his name.
They were men of the jungle, creatures of tusk and claw and loin. This very act of violence against his person condemned his whole race. These thoughts brought the mulatto an unspeakable sadness, not only for his own particular death, but that this idea, this great redeeming truth, which burned so brightly in his brain, would in another moment flicker out, unrevealed, and be no more.
Hence there are many topics that we shall not fully understand in this life; but "when that which is perfect is come, then that which is in part shall be done away." It will be seen also that details are not only unrevealed but also that they could not possibly be revealed. The main fact only can be the subject of investigation. Faith can wait for the revelation of the mode and the time.
Over these a delicate pink flush flitted in tremulous wavy lines long arrows of gold began to pierce the tender shimmering blue of the sky soft puffs of cloud tinged with vivid crimson and pale green were strewn along the eastern horizon like flowers in the path of an advancing hero, and then all at once there was a slight cessation of movement in the heavens an attentive pause as though the whole universe waited for some great splendor as yet unrevealed.
And those dates there, chronicling but the mysterious, unrevealed record of some obscure, loving heart! And in that chronicle, O Sir Poet, there was as much genius, vigour of thought, vitality of being, poured and wasted, as ever kind friend will say was lavished on the rude outer world by big John Burley!
